Adam Smith; is there now enough room at SKY for Carl Froch

Post by palooka »

Bomber Bellew put a thought in my head. In a post of his he hoped that with Amir Khan walking away from SKY TV there would be space for Carl. In a recent interview Adam Smith had said that there was just not enough room at SKY; that he admired Froch as a fighter and that he'd like to see him on SKY. Is now a good time for Carl to negotiate a bigger stage for his talents? I'll pay for a Froch v Johnson PPV no problem.

It's all to late but, Froch probably only has a couple of fights left in him.

So wht Hagler who cares, late or not, this a VERY good question.

So Adam Smith, now that the Khans have fuked you over are you going to put on the UK's most entertaining fighter or not?

Failure to do so will result in a very very a smell that will last for years.

I would say he has more than that left!

If Warren has any input, then no, Froch won't ever appear on SKY.

I don't believe for one second that they do not have room for Froch. Barney whatever (head honcho of SKY Sports) did say in an interview with BN, that, if for example Matt Korobov was suddenly available, then he would want him fighting on SKY.

I do think there is some kind of bias from SKY towards Hennesey and Froch, in particular. Not sure if it's Warren's influence, as he isn't shy in putting the boot in in order to make himself look better and protect his interests ahead of anything else.

Other way around IMO - Sky f*cked over the Khan's.... the fight was set, agreed and promoted as being on PPV.

My point was all his recent fights should have been on sky anyway!!!

If Cleverly keeps winning he could become a headline PPV success in the future. He is young, unbeaten, fights brave, showboats and seems a likeable guy. It would need a solid marketing strategy by Sky but one which I think could be achieved.

I hope Forch gets to be on Sky Sports & PPV. He deserves it as he's continuously taken on the best, is always in entertaining bouts and is as brave and as tough as you like.He deserves the recognition and paydays that go with it in my book.

Showtime paid more for one Froch fight, that Sky did for his whole career to that point.

Even now they offer peanuts for shows.

Yet their football-contribution allows players on £150k a week to warm the bench for a season. Barney Francis is a wanker who does nothing than play golf with his footy chums in Ireland and Portugal every weekend.

I hope so too but Froch is nearly 34 and surely doesn't have that many big fights left. My original post was made in respect as to who could become a PPV "salesman" for Sky like Hatton was and Hamed before him. Sure, Froch will fill the void for a few years if he is taken on but the question still remains as to who can sell big PPV fights on Sky in the long run.

I take your point, it does look pretty bleak, but someone from somewhere always steps up.

Re: Froch, even if he only has 2-3 more fights, they should be well viewed,They deserve to be when you consider the calibre of opposition he is facing. Its a nonsense that he is not on Sky.Still, he is getting decent exposure in America, so maybe they will appreciate him more than over here.

Agreed. I guarantee that a large percentage of "casual" fans have never seen Froch box which is sad. He is probably more famous for going out with the loudmouth than he is for boxing.

The sad reality for Froch could be finally appearing on SBO against Andre Ward in the final.Hyped to the max and then handily beaten(IMO,hope i am wrong).

So, do you blame boxers/managers for refusing to work with them when they offer a pay cut AFTER agreeing and signing a deal.

Hang on a minute - are you suggesting that this 'deal' was not conditional on a quality undercard being arranged and confirmed? Because if it was an unconditional deal then Khan could sue for breach of contract.

Clearly, this show being PPV was ALWAYS reliant on a high-qualtiy undercard. In the end, the undercard offered is dreadful in the context of a PPV event. When the Khan's failed to discharge their obligation in respect of the contract the deal was off.

I am no great lover of Murdoch but i am 100% behind Sky on this one. Perhaps if a bigger undercard budget had been provided by the promotors in the first place this wouldnt have happened. I've heard a few things that basically amount to short-sighted penny-pinching by Khans in relation to this show. Sacking Ariza being the most apparent one. But it's a classic example of penny-wise, pound foolish. They've ended up losing a fortune.

Is there no chance of ITV showing Froch? Surely with all their channels they'd need sporting content and boxing can do good figures.

ITV are not interested in any other sport than football.

IF (and I don't think its as concrete, black and white as people think) this was reliant on an Undercard and Sky made a "conditional" offer (first time I've heard of such a deal in the UK or US) - then they shouldn't have advertised it as a PPV, promoted as a PPV until the undercard was secure. When in the history of UK PPV's has the been a bill, classed as a PPV that was reliant on the Undercard? Mag 7 bill.... Okay - Undercard set and confirmed BEFORE it was announced as being a PPV.... when fighters dropped out - acceptable replacements found... this was announced as a PPV weeks before any undercard fight was confirmed.... Rendell Munroe was a FM fighter when this was announced as a PPV, Macklin was fighting Wright in the US when this was announced as a PPV, Fury was fighting an unbeaten puncher when this was anounced as a PPV.

There were calls for Sky to demote the Khan vs Maidana bill to normal Sky cause of the drop outs in the UK.... Now I could understand this, but it also highlights what Sky think of their undercards when it comes to PPV. This situation is completely different - as no undercard was announced when the decision was made to make it a PPV. Sky with a week to go develop a conscience? If was dependent on the undercard alone, Sky would have requested to see the undercard weeks ago.

Bob Arum said it takes a minimum of 6 weeks to sell a PPV...... so why did Sky leave it till 1 week to go to drop this - if the all important undercard was critical. They needed to sell these undercard fights now. Look at the advertising they are all ready doing for the undercard for Brahmer vs Cleverly. They filmed the beyond the ropes segment and everything for this PPV - surely they would have needed an answer before a week regarding the PPV.... How could they promote the undercard. Even if Fury vs Rahman would have happened - what could Sky have done to promote this in a week. I'm sure predicted sales might have a bigger impact and these 50 PPV buys already (quite feasable given the amount of advertising on Sky) - so they decided to drop it now, blame the undercard (which then will harm Primetimes viewing figures) and save face - in what would have been a loss.

Personally I will believe Khan that Ariza sacking was a boxing decision - this was made sometime before he went to camp for McCloskey. Great win over Maidana but Khan made lots of errors and maybe he wasn't as satisfied with it before. Roach has given this decision his blessing - my opinion, as it is your opinion that it is a money saving scheme.

Anyway, why is Team Khan the party that is being blamed - do they even hold a promoters licence???? I'm sure it was the role of Hatton Promotions to get the undercard right - and I think Khan has a case to sue someone - whether it is Sky or Hatton.

Spot on Gomez. To a point I can accept that Smith is handcuffed by the agreements he inherited until June 2012, when the contract renegotiations take place. But Sky cannot keep boasting about it's growing viewership and, worst of all, use boxing as it's only PPV sport without investing more money back into it.

Carl proved against Abraham that he did not need to get involved in a shoot out to win a bout. The things I've read about Froch place emphasis on his professionalism and 'clean' lifestyle. If he had perhaps 3 or 4 punch ups in him could it be; if he boxed, using speed and angles he could manage 6 or 8 more bouts? He's been in some hard bouts with tough customers but his chin or resolve hasn't been affected. Froch is obviously a driven individual; if he is getting professional satisfaction from his career and making plenty of money; I can't see why he'd want to pack in anytime soon.
