Larry Merchant should have packed it in years ago.

There are fresh faces around like Max Kellerman and HBO have to stick with this guy.

Merchant is legend in his own mind.

I like Roy Jones doing commentary - he is talks slower in commentary then he does when being interviewed.

I'm sure Emmanuel Steward is good but I cannot understand half the time.

I like Larry Merchant, but agree his is getting on.

He is retiring at the end of the year.

I can't remember the guys name but I despise the guy HBO get to do the unofficial scorecard thing. He talks like a hiena getting castrated and I always disagree with the guys scoring. Also that guy with the southern drawl they get sometimes to do commentary gets on my nerves who thinks he knows everything.

Merchant may well be doing a 'chat' on an American-based website in the next week. If it becomes official I'll flag it then. No subscription fees or owt. I reckon he's an interesting guy once you get past the delivery.

Harold Lederman is Cliff from Cheers, i am convinced of it...."Oooookay Jim, this bout is sanctioned by the Nevada STATE COMMISSION association FOR BOXING"

Jim: "Thankyou Harold for that use of 16 vowels in a single sentence by compubox numbers"

He isn't an announcer. And as for the question "How did this guy get a job" - Larry is one of the most respected boxing analysts in the game and will be missed when he retires.

Merchant is class, don't care what anyone says. He's not afraid to ask a tough question and I know he's a bit slow asking questions, but I think I remember him saying in an interview that remember he's asking a guy a big question after he's just spent 12 rounds beating or getting the shit beat of him who's still buzzing from up to 36 minutes of top-quality boxing. The poor guy doesn't need someone launching rapid-fire questions at them.

He knows his stuff, has been around for years and I tell you what, you had Richie Woodhall slagging him off once after listening to his post-fight interview, which made me laugh because he can't commentate a lick. He couldn't hold up Larry's cumberband (in no way am I denigrating Richie's achievements inside the ring. A very good fighter no doubt).

None compare with Teddy Atlas. There isn't a single technical observation left unmade when he's finished commentating a fight. If we had someone of his class on Sky TV it would go a long way towards erasing the "Why doesn't he just hit 'im?" element of armchair fans.

Don't you mean the fans you get at British shows and their "theeerrre's only oooonne (boxers name!) – only ooooooooooone (boxer's name) – walking along, singing our song, wandering in a (boxer's name) wonderland!!!"

The thing that annoys me most about UK boxing. It's the boxing equivalent to the twat shouting 'in the hole' in golf! There's no getting away from it. I can't remember a single show I've been to where I've not heard it! :x

Agreed, Atlas is absolute class. I've never seen anybody capable of describing exactly what is happening in a fight quite like Teddy. He points out so many things going on that I rarely notice myself.

That seems to have replaced the old "'ere we go 'ere we go 'ere we go version these days.

Back on Merchant - I'm sure everyone remembers that postfight interview after Daniel Zaragoza got the better of Wayne McCullough. Merchant lost it and threw his best left jab at a guy who came crashing into the interview screaming robbery. That was funny as.

Was it Atlas that i read about having a problem with alot of his boxers when training them, i think it was to do with him being a really hard on diserpline, heard its ended in punch ups before.

He does know his stuff though, reads the fights well when co-commentator

The reason the Tessitore/Atlas combo works so well for me is because Atlas is allowed to do most of the talking during the action.

Ian Darke is a good commentator but he missses (or chooses not to pick up on) A LOT of key happenings in a fight, he only seems to be able to identify when a fighter has reacted to a punch if it's very obvious. Jim Watt should be able to dominate the microphone more.

The trouble with Watt and Darke is they settle into an observation early, virtually calling the fight result and then proceed to repeat it endlessly.

I also think there isn't enough SILENCE in fights, when Darke talked over the ring entrance of Hopkins v DLH i found it repugnant. Only the first bar of the song came out, I think it was MY WAY and off Darke went 'educating us' about Hopkins.

Its 5am and you had to pay £15 quid to get the fight....do you think the viewers really needed Hopkins character and history explaining.....NOPE!

Let us enjoy the atmosphere FFS.

I found Hagler to be an enjoyable colour commentator. Nelson is good too.

BTW I think Darke's style lends itself beautifully to the football. I love his commentary on Premier League stuff....its perfect for that.

But boxing paints its own pictures better sometimes....

Although to be fair the relief I've felt at times upon discovering we've got Darke for the night instead of Adam Smith, is nothing short of immense.

fornicate me mate its called enjoying yourself.

if you think im at my most analytical after a few beers watching a fighter i enjoy and screamin youre delusional.

there two hats i wear as a boxing fan both at home and live.

one is a sober (ish one) when im coveirng a fight or analyzing and the other is as a fan just wanting to enjoy the night the atmposhere the fight, the craic of a few mates.

if that makes me a yob/chav then so be it.

the amount of times ive read on here a detrimental comment to a comment like "go on son hit him" is probably directly proportional to the amount of times ive shouted it in fan mode.

jeez guys some of you can be incredibly pompous, if boxing fans pay good money and wanna add to the occasion with a few songs to hype it up, why the bloody hell not. Who the frigg are you to judge? (not aimed at you dirt sugar just in general.)

what do you want them to do? take a fornicating pad and take notes for future reference?

or perhaps you might prefer the polite clapping of the japanese K1 circuit.

kinell, it s a raucous sport woith raucous fans, stop being so judgemental, its one of the reason i love the york hall the atmphosere is crackling from first bout to last.

in short stop being so friggin pompous :TU:
