After thoughts on Morales-Maidana

First of all I thought it was a great performance by Morales. I really feared for him after 30 seconds or so when he looked like he was gonna be in for a bit of beating. But he showed great heart and brilliance at times, even though it's obvious he isn't as quick as it once was.

It got me thinking though. Was it a great performance by Erik of did it just highlight the fact that Maidana is a one-dimensional slugger? And if that is the case does it take the shine off Khan's victory over Maidana?

I don't like this Boxrec trend of criticising (or in this case questioning) a victory when an opponent puts in a dire/losing performance in his next fight.

People did it with Calzaghe (Lacy, Jones), with Lewis (Holyfield, Grant, Tua)..

Maidana was a very dangerous prospect, people clamoured for that fight; Khan beat him, end of story.

Big test, and he passed it.

I wasn't trying to slag anyone off. Just using a bit of hindsight. On the night Khan beat Maidana I was mightily impressed with Khan. But then on Saturday I thought that maybe we've overrated Maidana. Or maybe Maidana just had an off night against Morales, or we should give Morales the credit. So many questions, just wanted to gauge the opinions.

To be fair you were only questioning it, as I said. But 50% of posters on here don't need an excuse to slag Khan off.

He deserves it for this PPV debacle and that's justified because the card is not strong enough, but I think taking anything away from the Maidana win would be unfair IMO.

IMO, Maidana is over rated - but it dosen't stop him being a test for any major fighter. I know he didn't put Khan or Morales down but I see that as part of the fact that he barely touched Khan and that Morales has a heart. He'd make a much better fighter if he learned to box his way through than depend on one-hit-wonders.

I only gave Morales 3 rounds. I don't see the controversy over the scoring etc. He did well, particularly as his eye started to close from the first round.

That Maidana is incredibly limited has never been in question. I'd like to see him in with Kotelnik again, or with the other Argie banger - Matthyse (sp) who stopped Corley recently and lost a close one to Judah.

Maidana can be out-boxed, I think we all knew that even before the Khan fight - but that doesn't make him any less dangerous. As Khan found out, one sweet connection with that overhand right can change/end the fight.

I still don't want to see Morales carry on any longer, regardless of how good he looked. That fight will have added more mileage to his clock, and I fear that it could catch up with him at any time. He avoided a lot of Maidana's big shots - and that's to his credit - but what happens if he goes in with a 140lb-er who's powerful AND quick?

After thoughts, good fight and throughrally enjoyable, at first I thought draw or maybe Morales win but after watching it again from an unbaised view it's obvious the right man won!! I think it's great what Morales did after so long away but cos did better than people thought he would that does not mean he won the fight!! I had him narrowly losing but I for one would like to see a rematch as it was close...

I thought this fight showed how classy Morales is.He is not as good as when he was younger, and has lost some speed, but he gave Maidana a tough, tough night.I think any fighter that is fringe world class or below gets blown away by Maidana, and that's how to judge Khan and Morales.

He's not over rated he is what he is, a KO artist, if you dont get knocked out by him you win. Fact of the matter is you have to be very good not to get knocked out by him and even then he's extremely dangerous.

I think it highlights the facts that Maidana isn't the massive puncher some make him out to be and he is very inconsistent. He looked good in losing a razor thin decision to Kotelink, he stopped Ortiz, took apart unbeaten Cayo, and gave Khan all he could handle. Yet he has also managed to look terrible against the ultra shot Corley (who was dropped 9 times by Matthyse) and poor against Morales. Morales put in a good performance, but I'm not convinced he is back. Just check out his other comeback fights, he has looked like crap.

The commentators said Maidana doesn't train properly all the time. Two of his worst performances were against fighters he might of thought he could walk through easily. Morales hasn't looked good at all during his comeback and as mentioned Corley is shot.
