I honestly don't think that Nelson had a consistent ring entrance music.
None that I can think of offhand like, it varied as far as I can remember.

sorry i meant the best cruiserweight in the world when he was fighting at top level
at his best which i would make around mid 2000s.
obviously p4p he cant compare to holyfield or toney
nelson was huge for cruiser and had skill and courage.

Should say, I rated him very highly as a fighter and was disappointed/disgusted by his early world title losses, as I'm sure he is. Those performances did not reflect the man's ability at all, but were part of his nature, as witnessed by the stinker vs Akinwande at York Hall. As his self belief grew though, Johnny became a phenomenal craftsman, a fighter nobody could do anything at all with, he was always in charge. I like the man, but he let himself down badly when him and Brendan crashed Carl Thompson's post-fight interview, that was just classless. Overall though, good memories with a scattering of terrible ones within.

nelson was avery good defensive fighter but he clammed up far too many times, even during his title reign, producing some terrible fights such as vs pietro aurino, guillermo jones, etc. even during some of his better cruiserweight wins like ezra sellers and marcello dominguez, johnny took so long to actually throw a punch that the sky commentators could not hide their exasperation. this is a boxer who sometimes struggled to find the mentality to throw punches, he was far too cautious for heavyweight and this is why ppl are harsh on him.

Is this Johnny Nelson, former European and world champion, who sparred the best around and never lost his world title in the ring?The only fighter who came close to toppling him during his 6 year world title reign was G Jones, and he tested positive for steriods(and has been a success since that fight).

To me, Johnny is a huge success story, and a man of real character.How many lose 8 of their 10 amateur fights, their first 3 as a pro and then go on to dominate V Jirov in sparring amongst others, and win worthy belts at the top end of boxing, and retire after a lengthy undefeated run? Not many, I'd wager.

In fact, being very nervous and still getting in the ring indicates the very opposite of yellow to me.A brave and talented man is Johnny.

I like Jennings and wanted him to beat Brook. It was unconvincing and I'd like to see a rematch.

And Moore is someone I've met on many occasions and respect a lot. Wanted him to beat Rhodes and he didn't. Was a shame, but I gave Rhodes his props. In fact I did it to his face when we met outside the Echo Arena on the night of the Smith v Quigley fight.

I do find it amusing how Sheffield fans are so blinkered, but that's to be expected.

PS Naz is one of my boxing heroes, if you carry on looking through my past posts you'll discover that. And Hatton would have walked through Witter at any point in his career. Don't flog that horse mate, it bolted years ago. Ta

I find it amusing Sheffield posters seem to be the most precious on here if you say anything against Brook, Nelson, Naz, Witter, Rhodes etc etc...but I certainly don't have an issue with Sheffield boxers. I'm just a bloke from North Wales, I don't give a toss where they're from.

On the subject of Nelson he appeared on a Tyson show here in North Wales last year, I met him and he was a lovely guy. Told an amusing story about meeting Tyson in a lift, think it was in Scotland somewhere.

I'm a little more "sceptical" shall we say of Johnny's performances as a champion. I remember he had one or two problems vs Sellars and Dominguez (I think) on top of the Jones one, I didn't like his post fight interviews in these fight. I didn't for one minute belief it was tactical and part of a master plan and always under control. Dominguez gassed for me, Sellars got caught and well.... he lost against Jones, and lost big also. He didn't give these opponents the credit they deserved it was like "so I lost a couple of rounds, I was in control, knew it was going to happen, just took my time etc".

Sometimes he would look electric, I thought after the Thompson fight "wow, its clicking now for Johnny" - and there were some good nights for him.... Looked the biz against Rudiger May and out in Italy for his final defence, nice to get redemption as it was his first fight on a terrestial network since those dark dark days... but sadly, most of his opponents in these world title fights remind me P4P of the guys Ricky Burns has been defending against - substandard in essence.

I feel he had the talent to Unify, just a shame it never even looked close to happening.

I enjoy it over in't'field. Also like Nelson. He's got a smooth, jazzy presenting style, keep expecting him to break out into 'She Gave Me Potatoes Of The Night' mid-interview. I like it, I love it.

Also agree with the esteemed Big Daddy Caning GL. Nelson was frustrating but could be nice to watch and always had the beating of Thompson in my opinion. I also felt that he would have had enough to get past Big Mac. You may not believe this, but I was once asked to list some fantasy fights and plumped for Nelson versus James Toney up at cruiserweight. That is some hardcore sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet right there.
