OFFICIAL: Froch splits from Hennessy

Post by greenyox3 »

Livefight.com can reveal WBC champion Carl Froch has decided to promote his next two Super Six fights alone without the assistance of Hennessy Sports.

"I'm no longer working with my representative Mick Hennessy." confirmed Froch.

"My next two fights are already mapped out within the Super Six tournament. I am just soley concentrating right now on beating the likes of Glencoffe Johnson and hopefully Andre Ward."

Froch will be fighting in Atlantic City on 4th June and expects a few Cobra fans to make the journey out there.

"Yeah hopefully it will be much better attended with it being nice and sunny, along the coast and only an hour from NYC.

"Showtime want me over to be ringside for the Manny Pacquiao versus Shane Mosley fight too, so we can put maximum exposure together. Interviews from ringside and being broadcast on such a big fight will be great exposure.

"The Super Six is really going to be drilled home over the next six months and it will be really special if I can put the shots together to wrap this trophy up in Style.

"It's all I think about right now. I'm going all guns blazing to win it." said Froch

Does this mean we're more likely to see Froch on Sky from now on?
Does Hennessy actually have any fighters left now?

Nobody can begrudge Froch moving on. He has more than served his time with Hennessy.

Yet fighters like Khan, Hatton and Calzaghe get criticised for switching promoters and or trainers. Froch gets applauded.

Please note - I'm not saying its a bad thing, but some fighters can do no wrong and other fighters can do no right. I do think the timing kind of sucks - "My next two fights are already mapped out within the Super Six tournament. I am just soley concentrating right now on beating the likes of Glencoffe Johnson and hopefully Andre Ward"

Thanks for sorting me a place on the SS Mick, now piss off!

Sounds like he is looking past Glencoffe a tadge.

Froch was loyal to Hennessy for far too long, he could be a much bigger name with a much bigger bank balance imho if he was with a more mainstream promoter. Hennessy's obvious probs with Sky have really held him back.

His world title challenge was live on primetime ITV1 - you don't get more mainstream than that!.

Hennessey did the very best he could with a hand that seemed pretty fixed against him. Although; from all accounts; Froch is a wealthy man it may ranckle that other boxers, less talented and less willing to put themselves into tough bouts, earn more and are far more widely appreciated. Hennessey always seemed particularly close to 'his' boxers; I imagine that the separation will be seen as a pragmatic professional move and not a personal slight.

Mick's done very well for Froch - that people don't give him credit for.

The BBC deal, the ITV deal...... yes, I think there are strains with Sky - after a good working relationship, sadly he hasn't got the midas touch like FW has who Sky come back for more after being ditched firstly for ITV and then Setanta. I was stunned Sky came back crawling.

Having said that, Sky have worked with Henessy fighters recently (Fury, Barker - at the time), so maybe their relationship wasn't all that bad.

He got him a world title fight infront of the ITV camera's, primetime on Saturday night - first time in years a ITV had shown a world championship bout on Primetime. He then secured a big fight stateside against a well known fighter, again ITV showed this.

Then got him involved in the super 6. However, the master stroke - which got no recognisition is - he managed to get the WBC to allow two fighters, who had lost their last fights, to fight for the vacant title - not even an interim version. Considering the flak the WBC got for Hatton vs Alvarez!

I do think the timing sucks and can see why Hennessy might be able to sue.

When listed like that you can say Hennessy did a fair job with Froch, I just think Hennessy seems to have ran out of ideas, TV is king and he has no good TV deal, so can't say I'm surprised that all his good boxers have jumped ship. Only really Fury left before he is back to being a small time leisure centre promoter.

I do agree, unfortunately I think Henessy has had plenty of innovative ideas - from terrestial TV, online PPV's, creating (essentially) primetime for Froch, Sky, involvement in Premier sports, a Eurosports highlight deal, getting involved in the super 6, getting Froch involved in the biggest fights - and still Froch gets no attention compared to Haye and even Audley Harrison. Frustrating for Froch, but what more can Mick do?

I don't blame Mick for running out of ideas, I think he's tried them all - and I hope he isn't lost on the game. He's obviously done some good things, since coming to the fore in 2002 - he's managed to get something must be like 11 WBC title fights (5 for Witter, 1 for Eastman, 5 for Froch) - so not bad really. That close relationship with the WBC (Witter fought for the WBC silver title last time) is something I think some boxers should take into account if they are dreaming of world title opportunities.

Is Mick Hennessey a wealthy man outside of boxing? Did he get involved through an interest and love of the sport? If he did then I can't see a reason to sue Froch. He's done well for 'his' boxers, shared real success with them; (there can't be too many other 'smaller promoters' who've done as well - pretty much against the tide). If Carl feels a break is best for him and his career then fair play. That's not to imagine that Froch feels hard done by and I can really see Frochs' logic; the final 2 bouts of the Super 6 are set already; 'giving away' a promoters share doesn't make much sense; it's unlikely that Hennessey could 'pay his way' with more PPV buys. Carl may have been tipped a wink; SKY may be more happy to deal with Froch on a fight to fight deal after the Super 6 is over.

All depends on how many fights was left on his deal...... Hennessy was pivotal in getting the Super 6, now its is coming to the business end of it - with the fights mapped out (which Hennessy had an involvement in) - Froch is saying - sorry Mick, your not getting your promoters wedge!

Mick was heavily involved in the planning of this, and now he aint going to get a penny for business end of it! Nice! Of course there is a big big case, if Carl is under contract.

If a fighter had signed to fight a certain fighter and there was a rematch clause - which was the exercised, do you think it would be correct for fighter/s to cut out the promoters out of the rematch. These promoters who worked hard to get the fight signed in the first place and put in the rematch clause, so without them there wouldn't be the first fight or the rematch.

I can really see your point and it has made me reconsider my own. Although all relationships in boxing are professional and should be contracted, many times a dispute through the courts is self defeating, (in terms of cost).

I'd also say that it is the boxer who makes a bout possible or desirable; if a bout is rematachable (I may copywrite that!) it is down to the boxers efforts. I realise there is a lot that happens behind the scenes and clever men are responsible for drawing up contracts etc; they are however dependent upon the boxers and not vice versa. If Hennessey is better than solvent then why chase a man through he courts? The only ones to benefit are the lawyers (£200 an hour +).

I really hope Hennessy gets out of this, he's a really good promoter who's just had a rough bit of luck. I still think he's got a half decent stable, Fury, O'Donnell, Purdy (I think).

I actually hope that Hennessy has had a quiet word with his boxers and told them he is thinking about quitting the game - because the fighters are leaving him at a rate of knots.

Purdy sounds like he has gone, Barker has gone, Froch has gone.

Purdy I think he might be with matchroom judging by Hearn pleasure when he won.

Certainly true on the rematch situation, although not in all cases as some fights have a rematch clause before fight 1 took place, and in the case of the super 6 - the format was mapped out, ironed out, before fight 1 took place. Hennessy took a gamble also in allowing Froch in the Super 6 - the minute Froch was into the final 4 his future was mapped out.... Hennessy played a massive part in organising and delivering this "dream" and now with his next fight is secure - he's told him to piss off.

This is not a Hatton or Khan situation in which FW was saying "look what I was about to deliver" - Hennessy HAS delivered Johnson, Hennessy was involved in the negotations in the Super 6 that worked out the seedings etc - and Froch has said thanks and piss off. Hennessy wasn't just a small cog in this mapping out for Froch, he was critical in securing these fights, he negotated them - he organised them.

He could have waited until after the SS, thats all I am saying - because had he waited until after it would be back like a similar position that Hatton and Khan were in with FW.

Hennessy has always got him big fights but that is easy if you are willing to take chump change and not get a tv deal, give away home advantage and options!

A wise move I think. Especially if it gets him on Sky. Froch needs to be whored about more too. You were looking at Haye's mug every time you turned the TV on before the Valuev and Harrison fights. Froch could use a dose of that to get the common man interested.

Don't really agree with that...Froch got Froch into the SS - he was one of the four champions at the weight so was automatically going to be in the competition...

As a promoter Hennessy should have (1) maximised his purse outside of SS money which would be a UK TV deal and (2) ensured that all odds were stacked in Froch's favour. He did neither, remember the 'agreement' with Sauerland that was done on a supposed handshake???

So he did okay with the Pascal and Dirrel fights then? And did relatively okay with Abraham (neutral venue). All these fights world title fights were on TV, many of them on TV around the world - Kessler and Abraham had live TV in the UK, in the USA and in Europe as did the Dirrel (which had ITV on delay and Eurosport on Delay - in addition to live UK TV, US and European TV), and Taylor fight.
