Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
I know everyone has their own view on the Sky-Primetime PPV tug of war and we've no idea how many bought the fight, but it could be that Sky will regret this long term.
From listening to what Oscar De La Hoya said in the press conference he seems about to form a partnership with Primetime and is offering them all the big fights in the future and plenty of classic old ones too.
http://www.brandhatton.com/TV-Features/ ... rence.aspx
So it looks like Sky won't be getting their hands on any of the big PPV fights from the States in future (well the goldenboy ones anyway) and that theyll all be on Primetime instead.
Until this bust up I don't suppose it made a lot of difference to Oscar who shows them over here, but it would leave a big hole in Sky's boxing coverage.
Any thoughts ?

It's an advantage for the fans if Primetime show fights.
Primetime does NOT require a current subscription to view PPV (just the one off fee), whereas Sky you need to have paid for Sky already in order to buy their PPVs.
So with Primetime we can pick and choose what we want, pay as you view , without needing to pay for Sky already.
(please do correct me if I have got this wrong!)

I think the thing you have to keep in perspective is how relatively unimportant boxing is to Sky compared to things like the Premiership. It's way too big a business to be too troubled by such prospects.maxicarter wrote:I know everyone has their own view on the Sky-Primetime PPV tug of war and we've no idea how many bought the fight, but it could be that Sky will regret this long term.

Aren't Primetime just a PPV channel? How well will American fight cards sell in Britain on PPV?
Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Doubt it team khan will back on sky in the future!
Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Why do they charge a fee anyway? It is stupid to charge people a one of fee so they can pay for a PPV. That stupid ploy has probably cost them a lot of PPV purchases (it put me off anyway).whicker wrote:Primetime does NOT require a current subscription to view PPV (just the one off fee), whereas Sky you need to have paid for Sky already in order to buy their PPVs.

Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Thats my point. If they get hold of all the Goldenboy back catalogue they can become more than just a ppv channel......a subscription boxing channel showing fights throughout the week ? Clearly Oscar has some ideas and says he's getting his people to fly over for talks, so he is clearly serious about this. Maybe "Goldenboy TV" !!Horse wrote:Aren't Primetime just a PPV channel? Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Primetime have said that they might do a mix of PPV and free fights as a way of making a name for themselves.
Interestingly, Primetime are part owned by Richard Desmond, who owns Channel 5 (as well as the Star and the Express) so there might be some kind of cross promotion/coverage.

I agree, but what Sky DO care about is the big PPV / Box Office shows. Thats where they make their money. They only use Saturday Fight night, Ringside etc to build up boxers in the hope of finding the next Box Office "Cash Cow"
Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Money talks mate, lets not forget that. If Sky offer Khan mega money for his next fight, he would take it!leforge wrote:Doubt it team khan will back on sky in the future!

Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
But you are forgetting that Oscar is his promoter so he will have a big say in it - and judging from what he said in the press conference, the answer will be a big fat NO (or something a little ruder)liamlion wrote:Money talks mate, lets not forget that. Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
That's where they make a minor revenue stream (in relative terms), but more importantly, how does this impact negatively on that? The biggest PPV shows are invariably those featuring British boxers and Fwank will be more than happy to oblige on that score....maxicarter wrote:Deserter wrote:I think the thing you have to keep in perspective is how relatively unimportant boxing is to Sky compared to things like the Premiership. Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
I don't disagree but the chances are that a British boxer fighting in a mega fight will be fighting someone with connections to Goldenboy, so who will get the PPV then ?- not Sky.Deserter wrote:That's where they make a minor revenue stream (in relative terms), but more importantly, how does this impact negatively on that? Anyway just think it is interesting that Sky might finally get some competition.
Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Primetime have been known to charge less for some PPV's. E.g. Hopkins vs Pascal was £10, Steiglitz last fight was a fiver, as was Holyfield vs Botha.
Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Khan doesnt bring much money in for sky so no they havent, if they get Froch on PPV he will do 4X the amount of sales Khan does
Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Yep, fair points fellamaxicarter wrote:I don't disagree but the chances are that a British boxer fighting in a mega fight will be fighting someone with connections to Goldenboy, so who will get the PPV then ?- not Sky.Deserter wrote:That's where they make a minor revenue stream (in relative terms), but more importantly, how does this impact negatively on that? Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Will Golden Boy buy shares in Primetime if they are going to give them the rights to a lot of their fights?
If Golden Boy want to try to make more money out of British boxing fans, why don't they just start their own television channel or channels (PPV or not)?

Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
Sky are bigger than Khan, bigger than Golden boy and certainly bigger than Primetime. If they want the fights, they'll get them. And TBH, it doesn't matter what Oscar says, he'll still sell to the highest bidder. He's a business man after all.
And I've certainly got a lot more respect for the stance they took on this (and a lot less respect for team Khan)

Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
To be honest - I do agree, I think DLH was just being polite to Primetime there. I can see why Khan lost it a tadge - the press were hard on the situation IMO regarding the cut and the desire of the rematch. I sincerley hope those jeering DLH stick with their word and when it comes to previews of Khan vs Bradley state "well Khan should be rematching McCloskey".housesecond wrote:Sky are bigger than Khan, bigger than Golden boy and certainly bigger than Primetime. Hayemaker Promotions have their own deal with Sky so I doubt they will be effected by what GBP does to Sky although Hayemaker do have a Stateside promotional deal with GBP.stujones wrote:I wonder now about Haye vs Klitchsko?
Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
I think Oscar DLH is far too shrewd and business savvy to align himself too closely to the Khan's therefore cutting off a big source of funding in the UK boxing market.

And Hatton is the British representative with GBP and has his own deal with Sky.TheCobra wrote:I think Oscar DLH is far too shrewd and business savvy to align himself too closely to the Khan's therefore cutting off a big source of funding in the UK boxing market.

Primetime need a decent commentary team or my mute button will be getting used on each show

Re: Have Sky shot themselves in the foot ?
We'll see mate, bottom line for GBP and Khan is to make as much money as possible. GBP arent gonna let 'principal' get in the way of maximising cash.maxicarter wrote:But you are forgetting that Oscar is his promoter so he will have a big say in it - and judging from what he said in the press conference, the answer will be a big fat NO (or something a little ruder)liamlion wrote:Money talks mate, lets not forget that. I think its fair to say that there is more shit talked, and false promises made in Boxing than any other sport going.
