Great piece
Expect to be slagged off on ESB for having an opinion which implies, albeit thinly that some fans moan
Good read

Great article. The easy option at the moment is to write another 'Khan is evil' peice but it's great to have some balance on the whole thing.Captain Hook wrote:http://news.boxrec.com/news/2011/therel ... -amir-khan
Any one who know's the 'real' Khan will tell you that the kid is one of the nicest people in the sport and although it's a cliche he does a lot of charity work and tries to help those disadvantaged in life.
The article could almost have been written about Lennox Lewis 10 years ago, another fighter who was never loved during his career either in his country of birth England or America.
Re: There'll never be a street party for Khan
I agree with the general point of the article, although I disagree with the idea that Khan is unpopular.
Maybe Khan is unpopular with a certain section of white, working class boxing fans, especially those that contribute to web forums. However, the majority of tickets (at least 2 to 1) sold on Saturday (and the MEN Arena was full) were sold to people supporting Khan. There were also many more PPV sales on Primetime than Carl Froch ever managed in 3 fights put together, at least ten times the 5-6,000 that Eddie Hearn predicted. That despite hardly any promotion.
Don't get caught up in the noisy minority, the majority of people in Britain do like Khan.

Two to one for Khan at the arena? Not so sure of that myself. As for the PPV numbers, this fight had the benefit of Sky promoting it for a while before they dumped it. I've heard 50k bandied around, does anyone have any info?gobbles wrote:I agree with the general point of the article, although I disagree with the idea that Khan is unpopular.

Re: There'll never be a street party for Khan
Khan had great support at the arena: even considering the Irish fans were much noisier, I thought the cheer for Khan was bigger. I expected him to get a mixed reception from any neutral fans but he didn't. Most people don't read every press release or statement that may get twisted by the media and judge him for it.

How many sales did it do

Cheers for the feedback guys...

More than 50,000 on Sky or online. That figure does not include anyone who bought it on Virgin on-demandjtourettes wrote:Two to one for Khan at the arena? Not so sure of that myself. Where are the figures coming from? That's the thing that annoys me with Sky and PPV events over here, they tend not to release their figures leaving it all to internet rumours unless they absolutely do gangbusters.

I am not disputing the figures but Primetime havent released and said they will not release the figures. Can you tell me what your source for your information was?gobbles wrote:More than 50,000 on Sky or online. Re: There'll never be a street party for Khan
yeah and there will never be a street party for lewis, haye, calzaghe, eubanks honeyghan,,benn and most of our most succesful fighters.
hatton, cooper, bruno and mcguigan were a select few.
khan may be obnoxious on twitter but no more so and less than many other celebrities.
lets face it its the hardcore white forum posters like u and i who hate him as we know him more than the mainstream media image and can see beyond it and see a young man controlled by money hungry vulgar people.

Hi CH, can you clarify something from your article.
But telling Khan: “If you’re a man, you’ll give Paul a rematch”, as one newspaper reported, was just pathetic.
Do you mean the paper reported that this quote was pathetic, or did you just quote the paper and you think its pathetic.
I'm only asking, cause when Hearn/s were goading DLH to say "yes, he deserves a rematch" - it seemed to be met with universal approval from the press.

Why would it be easier to write a negative article about Khan?exittored wrote:Great article. The easy option at the moment is to write another 'Khan is evil' peice but it's great to have some balance on the whole thing.
Re: There'll never be a street party for Khan
I think Khan's a world class boxer, and a joy to watch. I'm sure his stock will be sky high over here if he unifies.
Re: There'll never be a street party for Khan
Well i agree with the first part of your post but a lot of those 'white forum posters' as you put it who dislike him is simply down to him being of Pakistani ethnicity and a muslim rather then that he's controlled by 'vulgar people'.mugabi wrote:yeah and there will never be a street party for lewis, haye, calzaghe, eubanks honeyghan,,benn and most of our most succesful fighters.

I'm not fair to call his team 'money hungry vulgar people' either.
Re: There'll never be a street party for Khan
Khan is not liked by general public is not down to his race its down to his attitude I think!
Re: There'll never be a street party for Khan
Well i think the general public do like him, infact i'm quite surprised how popular he is amongst the 18-24 aged crowd i come across especially young women. As for his 'attitude' i'm not sure i get what you mean, he dosen't come across as a nasty person, maybe a bit arrogant and not too bright but a lot of 18-24 year olds come across like that nowadays.leforge wrote:Khan is not liked by general public is not down to his race its down to his attitude I think!

Didn't he go further and say "if he's a man, give him a rematch in Belfast". Hearn is a total chancer

That's it, let's be honest though, how many of our top boxers aren't arrogant? With some of them it just rubs people up the wrong way, but they're all at least fairly arrogant.exittored wrote:Well i think the general public do like him, infact i'm quite surprised how popular he is amongst the 18-24 aged crowd i come across especially young women. Re: There'll never be a street party for Khan
Very true, Haye is surely the dictionary definition of arrogant - humble Carl Froch has declared that he has his next two fights mapped out (confident isn't he) and prime years Joe Calzaghe as he was holding up his WBO belt, was declaring what right has Jim Watt got to be so critical, what has Jim ever done to judge him so negatively.Deadendgeneration wrote:That's it, let's be honest though, how many of our top boxers aren't arrogant? Even the boy next door, Jack the lad Hatton has got pulled up for talking in the 3rd person, as did Lewis.
Its part of the sport, you have to be confident - its such a tough game - and I certainly agree that I don't think Amir is the sharpest knife in the draw and I think can get goaded to making some PR mistakes (his twittering being the worst of these).
