New scoring system

Post by mike222 »

This has been implemented this week in a tournament in Cuba. The scoring is much higher than before with most winners recording 20 points or more.

Good to know. Any other feedback? Did people like/dislike it?

USAB just (as of yesterday) got our copy of the updated software and we're in the process of planning a test session to put it through its paces. I'll post more once we've done our testing and know more.

Higher scores are better for the sport. If there is a warning with lower scores, it can have too much of an impact so many refs are very hesitant to give a warning. If the scores are in the 20's, 2 points can still change the outcome but its easier to overcome.

Fans will like it better too since they got upset when they could see punches land and knew that the score at the end of the round should have been 8-5 but it was 1-0 instead. The "1-second window" of the old ESS was destroying amateur boxing. I am glad it will be gone soon.

It has taken 19 years to change since the Barcelona Olympics where Eric Griffin was screwed out of a medal by the old system.
For those who dont know Griffin outcored Lozano 19-9 18-9 26-17 8-5 and 10-9 but lost the bout 5-6 because the judges did not press their buttons at the same time.Lozano even received a standing count but Griffin did not get a point for that or for the five punches that precipitated the count.

If it was used there then we can now dismiss any optimistic claims that the new system will be more attuned to the American style :D

There is no need to change a style for the new scoring system ..there still only counting clears blows....they never changed the rule of the scoring blow.
