James Shuler?????????

Post by BrocktonBlockbuster49 »

THIS GUY SEEMED LIKE AN UPCOMING TOP MIDDLEWEIGHT PROSPECT. HE BEAT UNDEFEATED JAMES KINCHEN AND WAS 22-0 THEN TOMMY HEARNS KNOCKED HIM OUT IN ONE ROUND AND HE WAS KILLED IN A MOTORCYLE ACCIDENT AT A PEAK AGE OF 26.

in never saw him fight. how good was he???? did he have the potential to bounce back and be a champion. im guessing he got caught by a hearns right.

Hi BB

I only saw the Hearns fight on the Hagler-Mugabi undercard. Yes, he got caught cold by a right hand. Hearns looked different that night than the night he fought Hagler. He seemed to ahev developed physically into a full middleweight.

I read somewhere that Hearns gave the NABF (might be wrong) belt back to him at the funeral. I am open to being corrected on that... Wouldn't surprise me though, Tommy ahd a lot of class int hat way.

Very talented fighter, he had a great amatuer career and was on his way to being a very good professional fighter . He came from a well know boxing family in Philadelphia, died way to soon.

He was hardly caught cold by Hearns. Hearns softened him up with the most brutal left hooks to the body I have ever seen. They hurt me and I was only watching on tv. In fact they hurt my mum and she was in the kitchen.

Good fighter though, I recall that after the Hagler stoppage(this was Hearns next fight) a few gave Shuler a good chance but he caught Hearns at his best.

Brockton ... thanks for the props for the punching power theory. I am going to ellaborate on that when I get a chance. Probably try it as its own thread.

James Shuler ... I saw three of his fights. His first name victory was a points win over Sugar Ray Seales. Shuler was a tall, rangy middleweight built a lot like Hearns and with good power. His fight with James Kinchen was a good, tough rumble that Shuler won a split decision. It's one of those fights that put him to the head of the class in the middleweight division.

Unfortunately, he ran into Hearns and got blown out. No shame there, I suppose. Hard to say whether he was championship caliber after that, considering how deep the middleweight division was at the time. He was, however, an exciting fighter for his short career.

I read this a few times. Hearns presented the NABF belt to Shuler's family as he was Shuler's final opponent

Very nice gesture by Tommy, one of the truly good guys of boxing :TU:

I believe Shuler was favored by some to beat Hearns, but he outsmarted himself like so many other victims of Tommy's right hand. They came out so intent on not getting hit with the right and getting past the first 3rounds that they ignored the hook to the body that Hearns developed, then dropped their hands and got KOd with the right anyway.

I remember this one well.

James was destined for great things, a very good prospect and potential World Champion.

Tommy on the night was immense, unstoppable. The job he did that night was painful to watch. Yes he hammered James with body shots before taking him out.

And yes The Championship Belt was given back to the Shuler Family at the Funeral.

True, Hearns laid the belt on Shulers casket.

The belt was buried with Schuler
