BBBoC to take a look at Big Terry's card for Smith v Simpson

Post by dondada »

http://news.boxrec.com/news/2011/board- ... retirement

Is this the latest controversy that isn't really, well, very controversial?

I'm not saying that Simpson doesn't have a case but I think the card looks worse than it actually is. Some rounds are really hard to score. Anyone who has done a proper RBR themselves knows that it's easy to come up with a final tally that doesn't reflect the over all closeness of a fight.

Once they ascertain that Terry was watching iPhone porn throughout the 12 rounds he should be put in with Simpson for 3x3mins rounds, refereed by Steve Smoger.

I'll post as I did on the other forum-

WHY would you feel sorry for him?(O'Connor that is) If everyone else in the world sees something as a close fight then how can 1 man who is actually appointed as a judge be so wrong?
Folk like him are to blame for ruining and setting back fighters careers and with that their lives. It also outrages real boxing fans and furthers the decline of British boxing.
No wonder other combat sports are becoming more and more popular.

Journalists and pundits who are also nodding sheep are to blame also. Weak folk who are scared to tell it like it really is. Pathetic.

Yes, I've replied on the other thread.

And as for journalists who are nodding sheep, IF that is a dig at me then you don't know me or my work very well, do you?

As I've said, my point is that Terry MIGHT have simply seen three close rounds a different way. That's all. If I was a nodding sheep, I'd be with the rest of the mob calling for his big head on a spike.

Heres my post from before the fight

its just becoming all too predictable as far as judging is going

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
could be if Simpson looks to have won well

its in Liverpool isnt it , Expect the 2 close judges cards and the customery wide one from the 3rd Judge

should be good fight though Simpson boxed superb against Lyndsey and Smith seems to be hot prospect
i find the midweek fights seem to be better too , almost that European night at football type thing

You are defending the undefendable.

His ridiculously bad scoring takes another blow to British boxing. This man should not be allowed to referee again. If you've watched the fight back maybe you need to watch it a 3rd time.

It looks like O Connor has given Smith every close round; it was a close and hard fought bout. A draw would have been a good result though I thought that John bossed the middle rounds pretty well. His style of boxing just does not get recognised or appreciated by the judges.

I could just about have the possibility of him calling perhaps 3 rounds that were close all in Smith's favour and thereby giving a lopsided card, if this sort ot thing was an isolated event,
however, its not, Simpson has suffered woefully at the hands of these guys for quiet a while now and he is very accurate when he says the ref did him no favours in the ring either.

Smith was punching and falling in time and time again, very little warning if any was given to Smith, John was turning him and punching thereby catching him on the back of the head several times, you could tell Edwards was dying to take a point off if he could get away with it.

Edwards then left the most blatant punch behind the head which occured in the last round by Stephen on John totally uncensored.

If memory serves it was Edwards who ruled against Simpson in the Williams fight which was awful as well.

Now before anyone thinks I'm a scot and with an axe to grind, they don't come much more English than me and I think the fight was very close but edged Simpson.

The thing that bothers me is - its happening too often to Simpson, plus also in a fight this close the odds of not one of them making Simpson the winner are pretty high and yet not one of them had him winning.

O'Connor will get a sensure if anything at all and more likely little will be said, IJL had a finger wagged at him for the Reid/Ainscough prizefighter, that was an even more blatant (cant find the right word and don't really want to say it to be honest) Our game has a problem, its no good always pointing the finger at other countries, Germany,Italy etc, we seem to be having issues in a British title fight where there should be no favourites or no favors given, perhaps we need something more than looking at the odd scorecard, perhaps we should look at the game itself.

I agree; I imagine it would take a title holding foreign boxer of extraordinary nerve to consider boxing in the UK.

Not wanting to drag national sides into this ,but i really think the time has come for the BBBoC to review there selection policies for judges when there is cross border fights for championship fights (like sco v eng,eng v wales etc) so at least 1 judge is froma neutral country ...im not saying that O'Connor was biased but i know it leaves a bad taste in a few folks mouths when 3 scoring judges are all from the same part of the uk as one of the fighters ... but this is not the reason Terry Oconnor scorecard was terrible ...

Was it not Laughian who took it away from Simpson in the first fight?

It's not like it's a one off from O'Connor - He's been a bloody liability for a long time.

Some of the scoring is unbelievable, these ones are obviously highlighted because they are on sky but some of the small hall shows are just ridiculous aswell.
Its got to the stage that fighters records are just so false you cant judge their ability by their records!

Its a shame for smith aswell as hes not getting much credit for his two hard fought victories but obviously the real victim in this case is simpson. He's been playing the boxing version of snakes and ladders for years now and just keeps coming back.

Your all talking like bad decisions in the game are a new thing, it's been going on since year dot as the people who are responsible for the shows have a big financial interest in who wins.
If judges and referees don't tow the line they don't get asked back, if these shows don't happen no one gets paid

You have hit the nail on the head. It is easy to forget that the 'sport of boxing' is also a business. Everyone needs money and people are fallible. I think that when a boxer has a few losses on their record it is easier for a judge/referee to stick another one on rather than 'spoil' a perfect record.

Rubbish, the board appoint the officials not the promoters. Maloney never wanted O'conner on any of his shows again after the Fury v McDermot 1 fight but still had to have him and he will press this again after this fight but you will still see him reffing or judging on a maloney show

Yes, otherwise you'd have promoters picking their own favourite referee or judges. The boxing situation in the UK though is dominated by only a few promoters. Also there are not a great number of referees competent or experienced enough to sit in title fights. I don't think it is being suggested that there is outright corruption involved BUT there is anecdotal evidence that referees and judges do hold grudges against managers/trainers/camps and even particular boxers. The judges and referees are pretty intelligent I would say and would also certainly know which side of their bread was buttered.

Promoters can tell the board they don't want certain officials, was it a co-incidence Mickey Vann was always reffing Hatton!!

That was the WBU that appointed Mickey Vann not the Board or the promoter. Promoters cant ask for a referee or judge
