Cooper was an excellent fighter, his legacy doesn't need the mythology of the Clay fight.

...in both ali fights i was impressed by henry's speed. it became more impressive in retrospect as we watched ali over the ensuing years and how fast he was against his later opponents. i haven't looked at the copper fights but my recollection is that he stayed with ali nd made him step fast but henry was mostly right on top of him.

A real gent. Was never rude to anyone.

Used to host a show in the 1980s called Henry Cooper's Golden Belt in which boxing youth clubs would pitch their best against one another at a number of weight classes.

The winners would eventually meet in the final.

It was a great show, wholesome entertainment. Henry used to have a soft spot for anyone with a half decent left hook and I remember him talking about how it was best arched down and how he felt his power came from the shoulder and the forearm.

Henry was a solid contender. He was of course susceptible to cuts and this would have hampered him in any era. I suspect he'd do well but would not be a champ.

My favourite Henry Cooper story,

While training for one of his fights with Ali Cooper is driving to or from a training session with his two sparring partners the heavyweights Joe Erskin and Joe Bygraves. They are in a van with one sitting up front next to Cooper and one in the back. The are all laughing and joking and generally messing about. They're having such a good time that Cooper's not paying attention and cuts another driver off.

The driver, a nerdy looking little bloke, is so angry he jumps out of his car, runs over to Cooper's window and starts screaming at him. Cooper tries to apologise but the little guy won't listen and eventually reaches through the window and slaps Cooper in the face. At this point the side and back doors of the van fly open and two hulking great heavyweights appear on either side.

The little bloke looks at Cooper, looks a Erskin and Bygraves, then back to Cooper and says 'You're lucky you're with your mates!'. Hops back in his car and drives off.

Apparently the three fighters fell to pieces laughing.

What I would like to know is,what was the concern given by Angelo Dundee gave to the ref to check out the ripped glove?
(other then to delay the next round of course).
So what if Ali had fought on with a ripped glove?

People are misquoted all the time.

Yep only an extra 5 seconds. What most people don't realise though was Henry was ahead on the scorecards in both fights before being stopped on cuts.

I was hoping that when I planned my trip for England that I could have met this man. Now that chance has passed on into the ages. A true sportsman, and gentleman. Regardless of the public debate as to whether he could have kayoed Ali had he not been saved by the bell, or argue whether their rematch was close, is really immaterial and of no concern. Cooper lived, breathed, dreamed pugilism and always tried his damnedest. He revamped the European boxing circuits in a time when European boxers were being scoffed at. Without question, one of the gamest men alive; when you fought Cooper, you better have packed a lunch!
