Happy 90th Birthday Sugar Ray!!!

Post by elmersalsa »

Today would have been the great Sugar Ray Robinson's 90th birthday. Considered by many as the greatest fighter of all-time pound per pound. Well, I don't believe he is the greatest fighter ever, but, his record is very impressive.

Which was his toughest fight?
Where do you rank him at middleweight?
Where do you rank him at welterweight?
Winning the middleweight crown 5 times to you is a great accomplishment or it is an overrated feat?
Which great fighters of the Fabulous 4 of Hagler, Hearns, Leonard or Duran would have the best chance to beat him?

1) toughest fight? either gavilan fight (as in the first or second) or some lamotta fight
2) middleweight? #1
3) welter? #1
4) great accomplishment
5) and thats easy hagler but even hagler would probably lose.

duran would get destroyed. hearns would get taken out late. leonard would make a good account of himself but fall short.
Well, I don't know about Duran getting destroyed...Not at ww. Not at his very best. I think Hagler, Leonard and Duran would have beaten him at his very best. Hearns did not had the chin to compete with SRR. I give you that one.

by him do you mean robinson? i think robinson could turn out the lights of leonard duran & hearns. hagler is the only one i think that would make it a competitive fight.
I believe the great Kid Gavilan beat him.
I believe that the great Carlos Monzon would have beaten Robinson
I believe that the great Sugar Ray Leonard would have beaten Robinson at ww. Robinson wins at mw.
I believe that the great Roberto Duran would have beaten Robinson at ww. Especially, the one in Montreal. Robinson wins from jr. middleweight on up.
I believe that the great Thomas Hearns would have never beaten Robinson at no weight class. Too frail at ww. No chin. Wilts at the last rounds. And his punching power would have not been enough to stop Sugar Ray nor Gavilan
I believe that the great Marvin Hagler would have beaten Robinson by UD.

You gotta be very exceptional to beat the original Sugar Ray.

I don't believe Robinson was #1 at mw. Carlos Monzon is #1.

To be fair I think Duran, Leonard, and Hagler would be a legitimate threat to Robinson in any given night. I think you severly underrate Duran and Leonard.

Harry Greb should be number 1 in anyone's list. I also would rank Hagler ahead of Monzon.

ill be honest i think u overrate the fab 4 due to your obvious love of duran. even if gavilan beat him the first time in the rematch robinson won clearly. i dont get why you brought up monzon he wasnt included in ur original post.
I love Duran? yes. He is my favorite fighter. I believe that Gavilan beat him? Yes. I would not be surprised if any film exists.
I also love Leonard. I believe he would have beaten the original Sugar Ray at ww. Not at mw.

I agree with you in that I don't feel Ray is NO.1 at MW, but disagree with Monzon being No.1!
