Boxers autographs

I was wondering if there are many autograph collectors on the forum and particularly anyone who writes to the boxers themselves and what sort of success rate they have had.

I have been sending out letters to current and ex-boxers for the last year or so (usually enclosing a photo for signing) and have had quite a lot of successes (including Fighting Harada, PacMan, Carl Froch, Hagler, McGuigan, Gene Fullmer, Carlos Ortiz, Henry Cooper RIP, Ricky Hatton, John Conteh, John H Stracey, Carmen Basillio)

At the same time it’s a bit hit and miss and I have found that you maybe get replies / an autograph back form around half of those you send to.

I have just sent out a large batch of letters / photos a couple of weeks ago (Sugar Ramos, Jose Naploes, Mikkel Kessler, Jerry Quarry, Harold Johnson, Carlos Zarate, JCC) so will wait to see how that goes…

Good luck mate its something I did years ago (although I didnt send pictures out) & received just 1 reply which was a signed Lennox Lewis photograph. Off the top of my head I think I wrote to Frank Maloneys office & they sent the picture back.

I used to do it when I was in my early-mid teens, And I remember nearly all of them replied Glenn Mcrory,Floyd Havard,Dave Macauly,Paul Hodgkinson,Mark Reefer,Duke mackenzie,Gary Jacobs,Derek Angol,Nigel Benn loads of them all british or british based they sent back signed photo's and sometimes letters thanking me and they signed a playing card I'd enclosed (maybe that was the defining factor, they didn't want to be for example the missing 4 of clubs in my pack.) Once I'd got a complete set of 52 - I just stopped. Now I've moved about so much I wouldn't have a clue where they are shame I remember every single one was either a british,commonwealth,european or world champion - Would of been one classy pack of cards to have a game of trumps with. - o/t Why did they never have Boxing top trumps? I mean they had Boats and ghosts and all sorts of shit but not boxers who I'd always thought with all the statistics would be great for the game.

Where do you get all the photographs from?

I get most of the addresses just from researching online although it sometimes involves a bit of lateral thinking or a few emails to other people first to eventually get a contact for a boxer. There are also a lot of general autograph websites which give some boxer’s addresses. A lot of ex boxers are now involved in some type of organisation or business and you can get them that way. Sometimes I also write to the gym where they train and or C/O their promoter for current boxers or through their own websites.

In terms of the photos I send, I usually download high res photos form the net and print them off myself. For ex-boxers, if I am confident of getting a reply, I get vintage press photo off ebay for them to send – usually cost about £5-£15 including postage but it means you will have something pretty unique.

Where do you get all the photographs from?

I collected all my autographs from the fighters themselves at fight venues, i have about 20 or so,my favourite one being Ray Leonard.
