Amended Light Welterweight Top 5

Post by johnswan1 »

1. Hatton (He beat the man so he's the man).
2. Mayweather (Potentially the best but needs to beat the best in the division to be number one).
3. Tszyu (If he fights on he will still remain a tough test for anybody in the division but I don't see him beating RH or PBF at this stage of his career).
4. Cotto (Like Mayweather, potentially the best but needs to beat a top contender to be ranked any higher. Should aim for Tszyu IMO).
5. Witter (Still a distance behind the top 4 and unfortunate his hand injury meant he can't keep busy. Will struggle to secure the big fight he needs).

Anybody agree, disagree?

PBF would have destroyed Kostya.

I put Hatton at number 2.

Cotto at 3

Witter at 4

KT Should not be in the top 5.

witter at 4? why?

wqhat has he done to be ranked 4th best in the world who has he beat and dont say Ndou.

he may well be the 4th best but he ceritnaly hasnt done anythign to prove it yet.

Zoo shouodnt be dropped fomr the ranking cos he lost to a man in his prime Kostya still has enough to be a dangerous opponent as Mitchell will tell you and in my book should be ranked higher than witter based on achievements and dont forget he was very competetive in the hatotn fight.

i think he shoiuld retire for his health but until he does so you have to have him up there. blokes an all time gr8.

Because he was at number 7 before.

Gatti drops

Harris drops

KT drops.

What had Hatton done before KT? to get in the top 10?.

KT maybe at number 6 - not dropped from the top 10 - just the top 5!

KT should not be in top 5? Are you mad? He was universally recognised as top 3 P4P up until the Hatton fight and was able to be competitive (behind by 1 point on one scorecard at time of stoppage) at 2am in Manchester with 20,000 fans against him and at 35 years of age and after only 3 rounds of boxing in two years. Yet this puts him outside the top 5 in the division? I have to say I strongly disagree with you on that.

Those reason are a good reason why he should not have been at the top in the first place!

3 rounds of boxing in 2 years - he should have been lower due to inactivity!

Hatton was top 5 or just outside - so KT is now!

You also have to factor in the fact that you know nothing about boxing.

1. Mayweather - sorry folks, I can see everyones point of having Ricky at the top.
2. Hatton.
3. Tszyu.
4. Cotto.
5. Gatti.
6. Witter.
7. Maussa.
8. Harris.
9. Corely.
10. Abdulaev.

Mitchell has move upped and got a title. - Ortherwise he would be 5.
Urkal has move upped and got a title. - Otherwise he would be 9.

It's all very well saying he'd boxed three rounds in two years, but there's injuries to factor in and the fact that the guy trains like a nutcase (apparently). Also, why do him down for only boxing three rounds - it took him three rounds to humiliate the guy many saw as his number 1 contender. Would you have thought he was better if he'd dragged it out over 12 rounds?

Tszyu was a legitmate division champion. Let's not forget that he was a serious favourite going into the Hatton fight.

These lists are an interesting mix of ideologies. Having Hatton at 1 because he beat 'The Man', but ranking other people based on conjecture. These lists have to be conjecture and in that respect, Hatton should be subject to the same strictures. Otherwise, who the heck has Mayweather beaten at 140? Gatti? Seriously, I love the guy but looking at wins over Micky Ward to elevate you to a master boxer isn't the best way to go. Tailor-made for Mayweather...

Unfortunately, not enough of these guys seem to be making fights with each other. So far, Mayweather's proved himself in the lower divisions and done a number on gatekeepers at 140, so you know he's the business. Hatton's beaten the man, so he deserves a high ranking. After that, it's all middling stuff, even Cotto's not consistently good. No bugger wants a piece of Witter so he can't prove himself. and then we're into N'Dou-level fighters who are much of a muchness.

For the record, I'd rank Mayweather above Hatton, despite the fact that I'm a Hatton fan, that I dislike Mayweather as a person and I think Hatton is just about the only person at 140 who can beat Mayweather.

I think PBF is a higher ranked P4P fighter than Hatton because of what he has achieved in lower divisions. However, beating Gatti does not make you number one in the division because Gatti was never number one. Gatti was tailor made to showcase Mayweathers skills and as impressive as his win was against him, I simply don’t think you can put him in at number one in the division. Remember that Mayweather struggled with Castillo twice and won close decisions. Hatton is bigger, stronger and fitter than Castillo and would pressure Floyd in a similar way so until PBF beats Hatton, Ricky will remain number one on my list.
