I wouldn't be lying if I said I was a fan of David Haye. His skills in the ring, fitness level and self promotional skills are something to be admired. He has been a breath of fresh air in terms of his frankness and marketability. I fully understand that Haye is not everyone's cup of tea. His confidence can easily be taken as arrogance and there is a fine line between the afore mentioned self promotion and blatant disrespectfulness.

Haye's insistence that he will retire before the end of the year is both a good and bad thing. The thought of a fighter retiring, seemingly in his prime and with his faculties intact, is a refreshing change from the Evander Holyfield story.

However, if (and it's a big IF) Haye can beat both the Klitschko brothers, then he becomes the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World and it would be a crying shame for him to just give that up.

Maybe he could strike a balance and fight for two more years. He would still be relatively young in heavyweight terms and would also have the chance to enhance his legacy further. I can only imagine the atmosphere if he fought Chris Arreolla in the Staples Centre or if he gave Evander Holyfield a last hurrah in Las Vegas. Haye could finish his career with a fight against whoever comes out on top from Chisora, Fury, Price or Dallas.

Before Haye has to make his retirement decision, there is the small matter of July 2nd in Hamburg and a certain 6′ 6½″ Ukrainian. I for one will be a very interested spectator.

Many, many fighters have made similar claims and gone back on them.

Believing you will retire by a certain deadline no matter what's happening in your career is one thing, actually doing it when the time comes is another.

I think it will depend massively on what happens between now and October.
