Best Jab at Midleweight

Post by Ezzard »

Always discussions about Heavies but who had the best jab at 160?

Hagler's was formidable.

Monzon's was calculated.

Who else do we like at the weight?

Lamotta make great use of his jab, always putting the other guy off their rhythm.

Other than what respected trainers have said, there's no footage of him?

McClellan had a decent jab, when he used it.

Hearns' jab could be formidable when he wasn't using it as a rangefinder for the right.

As you say, Hagler's was very good - Accurate and sharp.

Hearns' jab had the speed of the jab and reach to go with it, what about Bernard Hopkins with his jab?

Hopkins never had a very formidable jab, in my opinion. Not good enough to be classed with this sort of company anyway.

Kalambay and McCallum both had supremely educated left hands in general. Joey Archer's another one who's liable to get overlooked.

While I think he was at his best as a WW, I would say that SRR's jab has to rank as one of the best @ MW as well.

...i have to say srr....it was one of the major weapons in his collection of many punches...and he could land it while backing up

..glad to see the mention of jake lamotta....short guy but could often out jab the bigger opponents..which most of them were...

in his losing title fight to sugar ray he was matching him almost jab for jab.in the early rounds...

I love watching Monzon use the jab, personally.

He certainly knew how to use his jab to control an opponent and setup his combinations. Maybe not the best jab technically, but it's certainly hard to name a more effective jab in MW history.

Languid like a reptile before it's morning sunshine. Never looks like it's going to get there and yet somehow finds its target.

What also surprising is how well Monzon could shorten his punches on the inside. Hopkins is also very adept at doing this.

And he could also keep throwing at a decent pace all night long.
