Genuine world title fight????
The question is, how is it NOT a genuine World title fight? Both are top 10 fighters in the division.

It's certainly worthwhile of a WBO fight, the quote suggests the top fighters in the division are taking part rather than a couple of fighters on the cusp of the top 10

I think Braehmer's lack of profile in the UK probably plays a part.

Times have changed, ey? As long as it's 2 top 10 boxers, I'm happy.

Also he's only 24 years old and has less than 25 fights so he's hardly had to show Marvin Hagler type patience in waiting for a crack at a belt.

If he wins, hopefully Clev will get to make his first defence in Wales, it's a disgrace that none of his title fights so far have been held in his home country.

He has waited patiently and deserves his title shot and this is a genuine world title fight. No doubt about it. This isn't a home fighter matched against a 'contender' for a vacant belt, this the the champion coming into the challengers back yard to defend his belt and unfortunately for Braehmer he will be going home without his WBO strap.
I very much agree with second paragraph - not sure we can say he has cleaned up domestically though. All of his title fights untill now have been for vacant titles. I haven't liked how, although he can technically, says that he done things the right way when he hasn't faced a single defending champion.

However, top marks of respect for this fight. I think Brahmer's inactivity will be the key factor.

I think around the time of the Commonwealth reign, Matthew Barney would have been more worthy than lots he did face.... Brain Magee was sort of campaigning at Light Heavyweight at this period also.

Your correct with what your saying, but I still find it frustrating, why could there have been British title eliminators so he could prove himself more. I'm not saying the other names would have beaten him - but there would have been lots more worthy than Billy Boyle.

He's beaten almost everyone domestically bar myself and McKenzie, he couldn't have done anymore, he beat up Murat and outlasted Brancalion he also bullied Courtney Fry so he's done great IMO, I agree with Taff that I jumped onto title level when he was just past the domestic scene, I have to do what he has already done which is no mean feat and which is also why he is a very deserving world title challenger.

While we do have a bit of banter towards each other, I would not let that cloud my judgement in seeing that he is a legit challenger to Jurgens throne!! I also hope he beats the German too, he has the attributes to do so, I just hope he uses them in sync with his brain!!

Good luck to him, I'll be cheering for him again..

P.S
Magee had dropped to SM and Barney does not come to fight as was seen in the McIntosh fight..

Thanks mate, it's only the truth, rightnow it is a step backwards, anything other than a world title fight is a step backwards.. I really hope he wins it, I have my own aspirations and dreams right now, standing in the way is McKenzie and he's all I'm thinking about right, the future looks bright though mate.. For British Boxing that is ;-)

I think if he wins then his first defence will be in Wales, Maybe Bomber and Enzo on the undercard with the winner being the next oponent? I would not be surprised to see Clev fight Degale at SM as well as Carl Froch moving up to LH. As Tony says "exciting times in british boxing" - Thank god.

Im not surprised in the least that Cleverly is having to take second billing, and thats no disrespect to him because he's a brilliant fighter.
Second rate World title fight? Who would Cleverly have to fight for it to be first rate? Braehmer's a very good foe, imo.
Surely its obvious?? You must be able to answer your own question... but if i must: Hopkins or Pascal. They are the division's top guys not Braehmer. As well he might be a good foe, Braehmer isnt in the world's top #5 at light-heavyweight though. Clev and Braehmer are fighting for the WBO title not the linear title. I think this fight clearly constitutes the description of a 'second rate' world title fight, a fact that i think is underlined by Sky's billing.

This is not intended as any disrespect to Clev. I think he's a great talent, genuinely. And Im sure he will step up in the future to face the elite of the division. This fight however, simply isnt an elite fight within the light-heavyweight division.

I think Cleverly might be a slow-burner popularity-wise, much like Calzaghe. He seems like a likeable bloke and he's obviously a good fighter. Degale has the Olympic fame behind though, him so it makes sense to built the publicity around him.

Nath is one of the nicest guys in boxing, lets be honest the only reason Degale is getting the hype is because he is fighting Groves, nobody else would generate this much interest and media.

If Clev was fighting the winner of Hopkins v Pascal, Groves vs Degale would NOT overshadow the main event - no way.

i'll tell you who i feel sorry for , Macklin and Sturm !

especially Macklin, he could have had 10 thousand rabid fans cheering him on in Hamburg , instead its just going to be his mum and his cornerman :(

I like Clev, and have been to a few of his fights, but if i'm honest and without stating the obvious i think the fact that he is Welsh as opposed to English, has alot to do with it.

If it was Bomber fighting Brahmer a year down the track then i think tickets wouldn't be so readily available as they still are at the mo.

You can never escape this English Patriotic thing.......

Good post Cardifflad..... I think this sharing billing with Degale, whilst I can see why its being done - is not necessarily a good thing long term. How can Clev establish himself as a star in his own right. Will he always have to be on the same card as Degale?

He needs to establish a Welsh fanbase also.

There are a lot of coaches going from Wales, as already stated if the fight was in Cardiff then a lot more Welsh fans would be going. This fight has so far cost me £900 so not cheap by any means of the imagination especialy when you consider I could pay the £15 and watch it from the comfort of my armchair. It has been very annoying watching the world title fight get overshadowed by a DOMESTIC grudge fight but that is the way it goes sometimes. I wish Nathan all the best in this fight and if he wins will then watch him go from being Welsh to British within the tabloids

amen to that! And people moan about paying the £15 PPV! I'm not staying over but the weigh in along with the fight trip will cost me a fair few quid, all this to be boxing fan! ;)
So you are travelling there and back for the weigh in as well?

this 'sharing' of the bill is win / win for all concerned...

degale brings the bbc olympic crowd to the table....clev brings the welsh lads....and groves brings the ginger vote.

all 3 are getting exposed to fans who may otherwise not have heard of them..

Cardiff-Lad1 wrote:As i've said before. i think that FW needed to put DeGale vs Groves on this show to cover the outlay in getting Braehmer over. I think that has cost a fair few £££'s and so the ticket sales that have been generated by the hatred between DeGale and Groves is funding that, not to mentioned their own purses!

As much of a Clev fan as i am, even i can admit that its plain to see this would never have sold 20,000 tickets if Degale vs Groves wasn't on the bill.

Nathan is still establishing a fan base and to ask a Welshman to sell out a London venue at this early stage of his career is not going to happen.

Personally i think its a win/win situation for all concerned and i can see Clev and DeGale sharing many bills going forward if they are both successful on saturday :TU:
How many has it sold?
