Welsh Title Odd Finish

Post by jonp »

I have just read the report of the lee churcher Garry cooper fight in Wales and found it quite alarming.
The bout finished when lee churcher walked away and couldnt continue with an injured thumb ,the ref went to the score card and called it a draw.

1.Does this mean a fighter can declare when injured if a mile in front on points and take the win.
2.Shouldnt the ref be able to see the injury was accidental(ie a head clash which i think this rule is meant for?)
3.Shouldnt the ref be the one who declares the severity of the injury not the boxer?

I am not saying Lee churcher pulled a fast one ,but dont you think it would be easy for a fighter to start like a train get 4 rounds ahead then when hes shattered turn to the ref and say i cant carry on iv hurt my thumb or my elbow or whatever?

I found this result and ensuing report alarming to say the least.
Whats peoples opinions or am i reading too much into this?

Yes, surely if a fighter chooses to pull out through injury then he loses? It happens a lot. The exception is when the REF stops the bout on accidental cuts.

Very odd if a fighter pulls out then he loses But under the new rule they brought in last year it can go to the scorecards but you have to score the round the injury was sustained in This was NOT done He only scored 4 rounds Just seems very odd Off topic Jon The BFU solictor has taken a case on for Bruce Baker against the board Will call you about it tomorrow

Surely tho the injury has to be accidental and the ref has to spot it?
A fighter hurting his thumb is part of the game and how can you tell if he isnt just tired?

I agree with jonp that it seems wrong that it got called a draw. Cooper for me was coming on strong.
If as Princess says, they should have scored the 5th round then Cooper should be the New Welsh Champion.(As he was winning that round)

Unless a fighter was injured by a foul they should lose if they can't continue.

To me it seems wrong that it wasn't ruled a TKO win for Cooper and I hope this doesn't mark the start of a new trend in boxing. This needs to be looked at imo.

I find it very odd that no-one at ringside on the night, officials/inspectors etc, queried the scoring of just the four completed rounds.

Completely agree, its a very flawed rule and open to abuse. It also seems in this case that the officials made a mistake by not scoring the 5th round.

An earlier bout that ended in a technical 1st round draw took awhile to decide though that was a bizarre incident. (Pryce vs Roberts)

Sounds like it should have been a TKO, amazingly the referee for the Churcher bout has been in the business for over 30 years! He should know the TKO rules by now!
