Was Haye a bit scared of Harrison's size?

Post by big lennox »

He looked very tentative to me in the first 2 rounds, and I am not sure if it was just tactics. If he boxes like that against Wlad he could come unstuck, but equally, if he goes for it early he has an excellent chance. It's a very intriguing match-up this one.

What are people's thoughts?

Not at all mate, IMO.

He knew what he was doing from the off.

x2

He let it go as long as he wanted to. Could have easily finished it in one.

Was that a question?

No idea mate, you'd have to ask him. There was talk about him having a bet on the third, and some controversy about it.

At end of day maybe he was a wee bit wary of Harrison landing a humdinger but any concerns soon disappeared when he realised Aud wasn't there for a fight.

I disagree. It's a legitimate question, as people forget that for the first 2 rounds niether haye or harrison threw a punch. He'll have to throw punches against wlad.

and if you think he wasn't throwing punches due to him being 'scared' of Audley then you're a crackpot

You are probably right, as Haye always looks very relaxed in the ring and up for it, which is exiting to see. I only posed this question as Harrison really wasn't doing anything at all, and Haye seemed quite respectful of his potential power.People seem to think I am well wide of the mark with this, so I am happy to stand corrected.

I am just very excited about July 2nd, and trying to envisage all scenario's.

What potential power? That was the thing that did my head in about the build up to that fight, from somewhere Audley suddenly developed a massive punch that Haye had to be wary of on the back of knocking Sprott out in a Prizefighter where he was dead on his feet.

I know what you are saying, and that to me is one of the many frustrating things about Audley. On the odd occassion that he did plant his feet, he carried significant power.

I still don't think Haye is comfortable fighting taller guys. He really struggled vs Valuev - lets be honest, however you scored the fight surely it was the case of the less worst man won - both were terrible. It was a massive ask for Haye, and I know the sympathetic view would be "how else could he have fought him, what else could he have done" - the simple answer is won more convincingly that what he could have done. He hardly took a leaf out of the Evander Holyfield notepad of how to fight a bigger man.

Against Harrison, when the moment striked, he literaturely jumped in at Harrison like a raw novice. There was no roll with the punches (what punches!), bob and weave. Again, not exactly out of the the Evander Holyfield or Mike Tyson notepad. Although, such unscientific ways of getting in, worked for Corrie Sanders.

Indimitated no, compare both performances to the performances in which the size difference was minimal. Barrett, Bonin and Ruiz. Haye threw more punches in those fights, Haye could dictate more with his straight punches, Haye didn't have to leap in. He likes fighting tall. But he isn't intimitated by bigger guys, just bemused.

However, one thing I think is in Haye's favour is his incredible power (no shit sherlock!). I was seeing his KO of Maccarinelli agan, the second shot that had him in trouble was literally from a clinch - there was next to no leverage in that punch, it travelled no distance yet it was a massive KO blow. Now, that could very well happen when Wlad tries to tie him up.

I think Haye likes throwing long range bombs, that seems to be where most of his power is. In close he tends to look very open and wings his shots a lot.

That's why I've always thought Wlad would be a very difficult opponent.

Au contraire. I don't think having trouble with a 7 ft 23 stone freak indicates he has problems with tall fighters in general. Haye says that he loves fighting tall upright fighters & i can see why. After glancing at his record i'd guess the 2nd, 3rd & 4th opponents were Audley, Enzo and Alexander Gurov. All were sitting ducks for the fast straight shots.

3 fighters with questionable chins, 2 of these fighters not much bigger (if at all) than Haye. Haye posed and pissed about vs Audley for 2 rounds and then lept in like a novice and Audley, being the fighter he is, didn't have an answer other than look scared.

Indeed, similarly vs Enzo - now a much better everything than Harrison (except the chin). First round, Haye did nothing and again he lept in a bit novice like and there was nothing from Enzo - no punch (even in desperation) to a relatively open Haye or not any defensive movement - at the end of it, Haye's speed, his legs speed, was too quick for Maccarinelli's reactions and yes Enzo did make mistakes. Mistakes Klitchsko has done in the past I might add, but quite a distance past now.

Now, wins are win - but both the Haye and the Enzo fight ended with wild, clumsy, novice like attacks against opponents making mistake. There is not the in an out of Holyfield, or the slip and move of a Tyson - he's caught both when they were literatally off guard.... and yep - he did the exact same thing against the biggest fighter ever, but again there was no consistency there, otherwise he could have done it much earlier and more regularly to put the fight beyond doubt. Again it was a run and leap and "hope for the best".

Fantastic speed to get away with it, so I don't intend to do Haye a disservice - and it worked for Corrie Sanders also.

Agree, although he can still generate alot of power up close - that Maccarinelli shot from a clinch was impressive. Joe Louis esque power. That could be Wlad's problem.

Maybe so, but what about the others?

Haye can drop you with one punch, at the very least put you in trouble, rice paper or not, imo.

He cracked John Ruiz in exactly the same way so even though that's true it may not have made any difference.

Nope he was scared of effin up his bet, he knew any flimsy shots could of ended it before the third. You could see with the presser he plans to do the same with wlad, he won't risk throwing any strong jabs early unless of course he's bet on the first.

Criticism of Haye's finishes against Enzo and Audley baffles me.

He knocked both MOFO's out for pete's sake!!

What's next? Having a pop at Shearer for not scoring enough 'subtle' type goals.
