Jeffries vs Marciano...

Post by Goodnight, Irene »

Since the consensus was Jeffries has Walcotts number, how does he fare in this one?

I see a great, great clash, personally.

Jeffries was a "big Marciano." Similar styles. Big punch in one hand - Jeffries the left; Marciano the right. A good big man beats a good little man; a great big man beats a great little man. The great big man wins here.

I'm coming to that conclusion as well, actually. Marciano might even be at a stamina disadvantage for once, & he would unquestionably be at a mammoth strength deficit in close-quarters. I think it's a great, bruising, mauling contest --- & I'm thinking Jeffries on a competitive, but fair, decision.

Actually I think Walcott gets a points win over Jeffries. :box:

You do know what consensus means, right? Just so we're on the same page, it isn't a synonym for, 'Crease.'

Marciano in as few as six rounds?

That is very game, IMO. I don't think Marciano would stop Jeffries period.

..as both were so strong and had great stamina. i have to go with jeffries here on size alone.

i think marciano would have done very well in jeffries' era.....with those long long fights of many rounds....and even fights with no number of rounds....just guys fighting until one couldn't go any longer...

Jeff would be the logical choice, but he did have two very difficult fights against The Sailor, whose size, skills and style were somewhat similar to The Rocks. Based on those fights I would expect this matchup to be a distance fight and very competitive with a slight advantage to Jeff. If they fought 5 times I would say Jeff probably wins 3 of the 5 and all of them are very competitive.

Jeffires was bigger, faster, & stronger, and likely had the better chin. Rocky is giving up about 35 pounds in weight, and 8" in reach. I would pick Jeffries to win.

Well if your analysis is a ccurate, yes you would have to say that Jeffries would have it.

But I think Marciano punched harder and more more durable. Rocky could dish it out and take it back in abundance, onm a toe-to-toe brawl I wouldf say that only Foreman had the tools to destory Marciano.

Jeffries just doesn't have neough for The Rock.

Well, that's how I see it anyway.

Jeffries is highly underated these days I must say. Up until the 1970s most historians ranked him among the top three heavyweight champions. He was, in essence, a Marciano on a larger scale, and for being 6'2" and weighing anywhere between 215 and 250 he was quite agile and light on foot. He wasnt the lumbering bear many believe him to be, a stigma carved in stone on him because of the Johnson fight. In a 15 rounder, I think its anyones fight. Marciano had a middleweights work rate and was just as strong. It would be a barn burner. However, I lean toward Jeffries on this.

The first fight with Sharkey wasn't that close. Everyone agreed it was a tough fight, but a decisive win for Jeffries. Jeffries was suffering from a bad left elbow in the second fight, so that's not a good analogy. No, Jeffries clearly takes Marciano 5 out of 5.
