Promoter allegedly said today that a unification fight between IBF 140lb champ Ricky Hatton and WBA champ Carlos Maussa is "an option." Warren acknowledged a rematch clause between Maussa and dethroned champ Vivian Harris, but asked "Who is going to want to watch that rubbish again and which TV company is going to pay for it?" Warren also lashed out at Harris, whom he says rejected a $750,000 offer to fight Hatton. "Harris should have taken the money because now he will have to fight for peanuts," said Warren. "But I knew he was an idiot because after he turned down the fight with Hatton he took on Oktay Urkal for a fraction of the money we were offering him. I've never seen a champion look so bad in the ring. He was unfit and badly out of shape, I don't know what his trainer Manny Steward had been doing with him in the gym."

Nooooooooooo! Warren: Hatton vs Maussa?
This from Fightnews this morning:
Re: Nooooooooooo! Warren: Hatton vs Maussa?
If Hatton wants to unify he has to win the titles. If he's looking for an 'easy' first fight then this guy is one of the most agricultural 'world' champions I have ever seenHesketh wrote:This from Fightnews this morning:Promoter allegedly allegedly said today that a unification fight between IBF 140lb champ Ricky Hatton and WBA champ Carlos Maussa is "an option." But that's the problem isn't it, we all saw how awful Maussa was and what a step backwards that would be for Ricky. Hatton is entitled to an easier fight after Tszyu, but not that easy! Personally I don't want to see Hatton unify with the likes of a crazy Colombian, I just want to see Ricky in good competitve fights. Unifications only lead to dis-unification shortly thereafter when the next daft mandatory is produced, unifications purely for the sake of unification aren't worth the bother.Coconut wrote:If Hatton wants to unify he has to win the titles. There are only 3 competative fights for HAtton IMO, Witter (no chance), Mayweather or Cotto with the latter being contracted to different TV companies. At least if Hatton unifies he has more bargaining power.
Incidentaly, does HAtton still hold the WBU? If so does he have to, at some point, face a mandatory ?

I can see what your saying and i agree that Maussa isn't going to be that great a test for Hatton, most probaly KO win in the first 4 rounds.
But having 2 titles would give Hatton greater power in negotiations with the other contenders, and if you want to unify the division then you can only beat who has the title.

Have you seen the IBF top 10? Makes the WBU rankings look like a proper murderers row...
And the WBU list his as their champ. To be fair, I can see them being more likely to put Hatton's opponents in their rankings than Hatton being keen to hang onto the WBU belt...
There are no mandatories with the WBU. Not sure if Hatton still has that belt or not.Wales wrote:There are only 3 competative fights for HAtton IMO, Witter (no chance), Mayweather or Cotto with the latter being contracted to different TV companies. theres not much else in the way of money fights for Hatton apart from those 3, maybe another competitive fight would be Souleymane M'baye , but i think he's a member of the who needs him club, not a big enough name.Wales wrote:There are only 3 competative fights for HAtton IMO, Witter (no chance), Mayweather or Cotto with the latter being contracted to different TV companies. yes yes yes.....i'd rather have ricky take this fight in november then have the big mayweather fight next summer at the city of manchester stadium in front of 60,000...
ricky said last night on 5live that he IS defo fighting in november..so take the maussa fight,he'll come for the payday and ricky will take his belt off him..job done

I agree. A dream for Hatton IMO. Get him over, bit of a celebratory atmosphere, carry Maussa for a few rounds then take him out. I couldn't blame him for one second if he took this fight - then went for a bigger fish.pasty_spud wrote:yes yes yes.....i'd rather have ricky take this fight in november then have the big mayweather fight next summer at the city of manchester stadium in front of 60,000...![]()

Maussa was absolutely dreadful - but had a good chin. And didn't he take Cotto nine rounds?
but what about mayweather? He may want to take Maussas belt too, and the bobfather has much more loot to lure him than frankie dubs. Looks like Harris will get the rematch though.
Isnt Mbaye the WBA no.1 and fighting on a sports network card this/next month? And isnt the WBA due a mandatory? Hatton fights a lovemore N'dou styke fighter in november with Maussa Mbaye on the undercard, Mbaye wins and they set up a unification in the spring, Floyd meanwhile gets a big fight with cotto(ok Im dreaming now).
I hope floyd and ricky dont turn into a 05' version of Roy and Darius, the speedy american stays in the states and the strong, endurance king stays in europe. Food for thought.

Re: Nooooooooooo! Warren: Hatton vs Maussa?
He's right, the key word here is "rubbish". And fight with this guy would be rubbish. Hatton would be about a 100-1 favorite.Promoter allegedly allegedly said today that a unification fight between IBF 140lb champ Ricky Hatton and WBA champ Carlos Maussa is "an option." I wouldn't be too dissapointed, Maussa is awful but is a world champion according to a prestigious governing body - something he can always tell his kids.
Why not partially unify the titles, nobody would have complained if Harris was next (before Saturday) so why not the guy who beat him.
I would rather if someone like Magee got Maussa first then we could have an all British unification bout, and a better fight.

The first defence was always going to be in Manchester.
This joker is perfect for that defence.
Come on, guys, give Ricky a break.
He deserves this fight, an easy night's work, and another title.
Maybe the game plan was Harris, but this has just fallen sweetly into Frank's hands.
By the way, on that subject, is Hatton now a free agent Promotionally ??

Bollocks, how many undisputed champions are there? I know very well how it works thanks.Kieran wrote:That's not how it works mate.
Mayweather and Hatton need to sweep up the titles between them, then you've a mega unification fight on your hands.
It's not just about the pugilists, it's about the money makers.
Hatton v Mayweather is a mega unfication NOW as much as next year.
