Could Whitaker have done anything else?

Post by JC »

I've seen alot of Whitaker's fights on film but was a only a kid in the mid 80s/90s and so wasn't really aware of the finer points of the boxing scene he was operating in.

Did he fight everyone he was supposed to or was there a Pacquiao to his Mayweather he could have moved up or down to fight?

I ask because if he did fight the best of his era and you rank fighter by the ability they exhibited against the available opposition then surely he must rank very high.

Should he be included with the Robinson, Duran, Greb class of fighter?

He fought anyone you could have asked him to and he ranks as the best of his generation imo. A tad below the other guys you named, but most are.

The way he could have done more is taken care of himself outside of the ring and probably fought on a bit longer. But nobody came close to him in his prime.

Very hard to pick holes in his record. I'm a big one for judging fighters based on the norms of their era and what they were able to show as a result

i.e. I don't blame Marciano for coming along in a weaker HW era but I would rank him higher if he hadn't made such hard work of Charles and Walcott.

Whitaker was so dominant at his best his record seems pretty complete. But as you say longevity is probably what puts others ahead of him.

I have him in the all time top 15 or 20 so the others are a limited bunch for me.

Of course he could have. Havent you heard? He was the best EVA, he could've been Light Heavyweight champ and would've exposed Hopkins, Toney, and Jones single-handedly. At least now we get to see him apply his infinite excellence as a trainer. Zap Judah is set to conquer the world with a guru like Sweet Pea, if he doesn't want God to hit one of his fighters you may as well just throw the co pubis counters in the trash.

Do you ever get tired of writing these stupid posts on Whitaker? I sure tire of reading them.

I'm sweet an innocent with regards to previous Whitaker discussion. Do you feel he's overrated G,I?

In his defense, I attack Arreola every time he is mentioned. Then again, my jokes can be funny and, past the nice rack, Arreola is a useless tub of jello.

DW is not an appreciator of the finer points of Whitakers craft. He makes me sick, really :DD

I rate Whitaker #4 all-time at LW (above Duran) and he is a top-30 all-timer.

I actually rate Whitaker, I just feel hes overrated by the majority. Capping on him in BOTP is kind of a fun catharsis in jest.
