Scotland's first World Champion

Post by Ally »

Regarding Jonny Hill:

I spoke today with Brian Donald, journalist and boxing historian, who has been doing some research into the ex Leith Victoria (my club) Boxer. He has been given access to the family files and has read a letter from the New York State Commission confirming that Jonny Hill was their recognised World Champion after Defeating 'Newsboy' Brown in 1928. This confirmation makes Jonny Hill Scotland's First World Champion.

California also recognized the Newsboy Brown-Hill fight as for the title, as did, of course, Britain.

Yes they did.

However the premier sanctioning body of the day was the NYSAC. Until recently confusion as to their position has led to Benny Lynch being credited as Scotland's first world champ.

Any chance I can get a scan of the NYSAC letter for the archives?

Might be a bit early the guy is writing a book. I'll talk to him though.
