The Maidana fight!? Avoiding Maidana's wide, slow punches is hardly indicative of a quality defense, although I do tend agree more with you regarding Morales defense. In his prime his defense wasn't that bad, but I would hardly use anything he is doing now as an example of his skills.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:While Erik wasn't the smartest fighter, he was capable of defense. Watch the Maidana fight.
The Maidana-Morales fight should be used more as an example of how limited Maidana's skills are. He's one tough SOB, but in earlier eras he would have been nothing more than a very tough club fighter.

Watching him slip and roll punches as a slow old man with one eye was a thing of beauty. Ofen times great fighters will show you more in that regard in the late stages of their careers when they can't keep up the pace of their youth and overwhelm guys with offense. If I wanted to show someone the defensive genius of Duran I wouldn't cite Lightweight fights.
I didn't call marcos a great fighter. But it was an excellent example that Erik possesses better defensive skills and instincts than he is given credit for. Certainly on par with the poetry in motion that was Chuco Castillo.

Even Jess Willard would be able to avoid Maidana's punches and he's been dead for over 40 years now.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Watching him slip and roll punches as a slow old man with one eye was a thing of beauty. The next time Maidana fights someone he didn't hit regularly will be the first. He applies a ton of pressure and there aren't many fighters who have ever fought in that weight class that he wouldn't hit on the chin far more than once.
It's easy to look at his poor technique. But he throws a lot of punches and never stops coming. He doesn't suck at all, though he has been overrated by many because of his entertaining style.

As I said before, Maidana is one tough SOB, but in earlier eras he would have been nothing more than a very tough club fighter. I never said that he sucked, just that his skills are limited, which should be painfully obvious.
Most top JrWW and WW of the past would have embarrased Maidana.

You're underrating him. Jr Welterweight isn't a long storied division. In fact, it is currently as strong as it has ever been and Maidana hasn't been embarrassed yet. Doesn't really matter. The initial point I made stands true. The Great John L wrote:As I said before, Maidana is one tough SOB, but in earlier eras he would have been nothing more than a very tough club fighter. All one need do is watch the Zaragoza fight to get a prime example of Morales's defense, or lack thereof. It was appalling how often an ancient Zaragoza (who'd really dropped off as a technician the further his career went along to compound with his age) managed to tag him clean with those sloppy overhands.

He was always more into slinging his balls on the table than exhibiting his Boxing skills. That doesn't mean he didn't possess them. And he isn't being compared to Pernell Whitaker here anyway.
