The Boxrec referee Hall Of Shame

Post by MightyWarrior »

Step up Benji Estevez, last seen trying to get Ruben Galvan killed on Saturday night.
He now joins Jack The Butcher Reiss as one of the most dangerous referees on the scene.

Actually, Saturday wasn't too great all round for refs, was it? Gatti, at least in his mind, gets sucker punched in the first round, Estevez, as you say, watches Galvan take at least a minutes worth of unnecessary punishment. And on top of that, Maussa-Harris features low-blows, a sly headbutt, the odd rabbit punch, and most incredibly, an attempt to smack Harris in the head as he lays under the ropes. None of which the ref sees fit to comment on.

Quite ironic, considering the amount of criticism Dave Parriss has recieved from certain quarters.

That was Gatti's fault, it wasn't a sucker punch as the referee had not instructed them to break, you keep punching til the ref tells you otherwise, though most people take their opponent falling prostrate on the canvas as the signal to stop hitting them... :TU:

Have to agree with James

The referee cannot be held responsible for a seasoned pro dropping his guard because he wants a bit of a moan. what do they say? "protect yourself at all times"

Mayweather did exactly what he should have done. Clocked the silly bleeder

I'm not disagreeing. Just stating that Gatti thought he was hard done by. There was a minor bit of confusion as they broke, Gatti not protecting himself, Mayweather ready to smack him with the left hand. Indicitive of the whole fight: Gatti just wasn't there, mentally or physically.

How the commentry screamed you`d think Chavez Jr. was murdering his opponent, sure he landed punches but they were not heavy punches, sure I would not like to be taking them but Galvan protested to his corner at the stoppage.
When a fighter has visibly had enough and is catching too many fair enough but the example I look to is the recent Castillo and Corrales fight.
Corrales got hit about but turned it about, Castillo caught some and then looked totally out of it before the ref made an excellent stoppage....there was no protest from Castillo untill long after his head cleared.

I don't like Paul Thomas or John Keane too much on the British scene...however Benji Estevez did a pretty poor job on the Chavez-Galvan bout.

As for Gatti i think he was saying to ref that Mayweather had leaned his weight on him during the clinch but the ref wasn't interested.

You've got to be joking - there was absolutely no need for Galvan to take about a minutes worth of head shots when he was clearly a defenceless, beaten man. You could see people ringside yelling for it to be stopped too.

Even more worrying was the ref was happy for it to continue, and only stopped it when the towel finaly came in.

This is meant to be boxing, not a public execution.

And yes the Castillo stopage was spot on.

You could actually see Larry Hazzard waving his arms around outside the ring for the referee stop that fight. I think that is a fair indication of how bad it was.

gavlan walked back to his corner at the end of the third with his arms outstretched staggering badly, he seemed to be suggesting to me that the ref was trying to get him killed.

Question, why didn't his corner stop it, they must have known he had no chance.

I took that as him asking like 9 out of 10 boxers who get the towel thrown in on them ask their corner.

`Why did you do that?`

He was the fall guy as soon as he accepted the fight, but I would have imagined he would have liked to stay the distance and thought he had weathered the worst of the storm.

Ask `Jacko` what he thought when Ryan Rhodes was landing big on him recently, I`m sure some thought he too should have been stopped from taking further punishment, but these are brave, brave men who wrightly or wrongly think they can turn it around.

Gavlan did not look for one second he wanted to quit.

Yeah well thankfully that's got nothing to do with it.
Castillo didn't want to quit either - nor did Paul Ingle, Michael Watson and many others.

That's why a referee is there: he gets paid to look out for boxers who are too brave for their own good.
Can't count on the corner to do the right thing, as we've seen numerous times.

Pretty bad example to your point.
Castllo did not know where he was, he was held up only by the ropes totally defencless. Excellent stoppage, no doubt :TU:

And Michael Watson did not get hit from pillar to post..it was an upper-cut which was the beginning of the end..a perfectly timed upper-cut off the then punished Eubank who had just been floored.

Paul Ingle may have taken more punishment but it was never one sided untill the very end.

I am not saying it should not have been stopped, only it was not as bad as the commentry were screaming :-?

I thought it was pretty disgraceful. A hopelessly overmatched opponent being knocked around the ring for a round and a half is more than enough for me.
