information on an old boxer - help needed - MARTY GOLDMAN
Hey all,
I am new to the forum and hoping for some insight and help.
My grandfather, Marty Goldman, was a boxer in the early 1930's.
He fought out of NYC/Brooklyn - fought at MSG too. He was managed by Abe Attell. I have found these links with some info:
http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=011947
http://www.jewsinsports.org/profile.asp ... ing&ID=104
My grandfather passed away in 1987 and shortly thereafter, my grandmother's house had a fire and most newspaper clippings and photos of him that the family had, went up in flames. We have a nice press shot of him and Abe left, but not much else.
I am trying to piece together some info on him for the family. Apparently he was a very well known boxer in that era, but because he was a very quiet person, he turned down a ton of publicity and offers to be written up in books. He was friends with a lot of big people in that time (Damon Runyan etc) and of course, with Abe being his manager, I am surprised I can't find more.
If anyone either has info on him, or knows of some good places for me to maybe find some, I would greatly appreciate the help. I know there has to be more out there, but I am having problems finding it. I figure there are some good places to look, I just don't know them.
Thanks again in advance.

Go to your public library and request them to get some old newspapers on microfilm for you. There were a few New York Papers so you can find a lot of information on your Grandfather. Brooklyn Eagle, New York Times, New York Herald would be a good place to start! I have several Ring magazines for that time and I'll go through them and see what I can find, which there should be quite a bit about him. Send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll get back to you!

help
Nice one Barry, always there with with good advice. As you say there should be a fair amount of material available and I will also have a look in the news archive places and see what I may be able to come up with.
I wish you luck in your search

cheers barry i will be seeing him this coming Sunday with luck.
with regard to Goldman I have had a look but little joy finding anything which is a pain. most is just the "fights last night" thing just giving names. However got 2 which are ok and will send them.
Must be more available but just takes a bit of time. will keep looking and good luck with the ideas from barry

Marty Goldman
I remember a Marty Goldman that owned a candy store in East New York section of Brooklyn in the 1950's. I seem to recollect he had a K.O. win over Eddie "Cannonball" Martin.Wonder if this is the same person.
It was a luncheonette, not a candy store. Do you remember this cause you knew it or because you read about it? Are you saying you went there and knew him??
My grandmother just gave me the lowdown on some other info that may help:
Ed Sullivan (when he was a sportswriter) or Walter Winchell (she can't remember which one) predicted that he would be the lightweight champion the year he wrote the article (my grandmother doesn't remember what year it was).
Also:
Damon Runyon (who wrote Guys and Dolls) discovered him and hooked him up with Abe Attell. Runyon was a writer out of the midwest before moving to NY.
My grandfather was the only boxer managed by Attell.
One of the main reasons why my grandfather doesn't have much pub is because Attell was very cheap and didn't want to pay a certain fee that was needed to get him listed in many books/publications....
Maybe this helps some avenues to get more info.
Also, fyi:
Birth Date: 3/7/1910
Death Date: 2/17/1987

Dear Marty Goldman's Grandson,
My name is Jyl Attell-Klein. I am Abe Attell's great niece. I am also finishing up a book about my uncle Abe due to be sent to my publisher next month. I was just looking to see if I could find more information on your grandfather today and I saw your post. I hope you get this message. Please respond to my personal email at [email protected] Thank you.

49 fights in four years -- you just don't see that anymore.
