Warren changed his tune on Degale loss :-

Post by whiskey »

Last night in the corridor, he said he had James by a point and could see why someone would see it the other way. That Degale was poor and didnt throw uppercuts. Hopefully now the back slappers would leave.

Cue ghostwriter :-

allegedly has called on the BBBofC to grant James DeGale an immediate rematch against George Groves.

DeGale lost his British super-middleweight title to Commonwealth champion Groves on Saturday night.

But the fight ended controversially with Groves winning a contentious majority decision.

The two judges who gave Groves the fight did so by a single round.

"The general consensus seems to be that James won the fight, so they should order a rematch," said Warren.

"I don't think George's team will be interested, but there's no-one else for him. It should happen straight away."

"One way or another that fight will happen again. If it doesn't happen, George Groves should be ashamed of himself.

"I haven't found one person who thought George won that fight and I'm sure he's got a lot of pride and he wouldn't want it to be like that.
"I'm sure he wants his victory to be an emphatic one."

A despondent DeGale - who slumped to his first professional defeat - also called for a return against his bitter London rival.

"How can a challenger nick a fight on the back foot like that?" said DeGale.

"I thought I hit him with the cleaner shots, I hurt him in the ninth round, and the last four rounds I won easy.

"He can't be proud of that win. He beat me, but he nicked it. I want a rematch as soon as, but we'll have to see what Frank and the Board do."

But Groves insisted that he was under no obligation to give DeGale a rematch.

"How many times do I have to beat this man? After this fight I'll go on to bigger and better things," he said.

"He has no titles, he's just come off a loss, I'm pretty sure I can find a better opponent than James DeGale.

"I've always said, once I've finished with James DeGale I've cleared up the domestic scene and I'm looking at bigger and better things.

"Possibly I can see it happening a few years down the line, when we've both got different versions of the world title. He's got a good promoter, I'm sure he can get there, he'll just have to take a different route from me. I'm taking a more direct one."

I bet if DeGob had won in the same fashion, there'd be no way that Fra nk Warren would campaigning for an immediate rematch.

What he needs to do is tell James to prepare for his fights properly in future; that would be the best thing he can do right now.

I'd love to see that fight again but right now it makes no sense - let Groves crack on, as he is entitled to do, maybe for the European title. Degale Im sure will pick up the British and C'Wealth titles when Groves vacates, unless Warren gets him a World title fight on the Khan script - fight a past-his-best faded legend and then the weakest titlist out there... I might see if I can find a bookie who will take on RJJ vs Degale, and then Degale vs Sartison or Steiglitz.

Groves doesn't need Degale anymore. Sour grapes by both Warren and Degale.

Groves should leave Degale hanging by a thread. Groves doesn't need Degale anymore, Degale needs him.

id like to see groves win the londsdale outright, but i have a funny feeling hayemaker will go straight down the european route so groves almost has the 'full set' ...

i would try brian magee next, or stieglitz...that would give us an indication of georges potential. would he beat either or both of these2 ?

He needs to remember that he is a promoter and not an Emperor.

Hayemaker won't want the rematch out of principle.

If the Board order it, I can see Groves vacating and trying to get a shot at the European and DeGale getting a 'Khan Ride' to a world title; i.e, getting in with a bum, then an old 'legend' on his record, then some kind of eliminator bypassing British and European before getting the weakest titlist out there once the S6 has finished. Only problem is, it's a competiative division, as is Light Heavy so his path maybe blocked somewhat.

Warren if you're reading this theres as poll going and 70% of people think groves won.

I think magee is the next obvious opponent for groves.

What a very true and damning indictment of the 'morals' of the 'sport'. What is wrong with authentic achievement? If the very best that can be achieved is Area, British, Comonwealth, European titles; what is wrong with that? it is IMO far more honest than being a full level below the title claimed; in plain view of the paying public, fans and other boxers. No one is really fooled.

He will have improved with the win last night but I don't think he should jump straight in with Magee and certainly not in with Stieglitz, who is no World beater but is strong and seasoned.

Were groves goes next is totally up to him and the team around him but I really hope it's as far away from degale as possible, hype is always used to sell tickets and this rivalry is nothing different but the way degale taunted him with the ginger and the ugly kid business I'd make him go away fight a year or so and earn a rematch. Groves deserves to move on and make some real money and win other titles on the back of his performance last night

Let's face it, it was obvious no matter how close or how wide Degale got beat he would never have accepted it. He's just that kinda guy. The fight wiz close i bet Groves woulda shown a bit more decorum had he lost. I dunno about putting him in with Magee? Look at the struggle he had with Anderson, Magees a seasoned fighter.

Groves is only 23 and 13 fights deep he has 3 decent scalps on his record.
He doesnt need to rush, he says he is done with the domestic scene but I think anything beyond european level he will come unstuck at present. Magee is a big ask, he is capable of beating him, but it may be too soon, even after last night, style wise id favour Degale against Magee more so than Groves.

Adam Booth seemed to be enjoying himself last night; I'm not sure that he'd give the whole thing up with no massive reason to do so. George Groves may turn into a really very popular middleweight who packs arenas; why wouldn't the team that helped get him there want to experience that?

There's no broadcaster with a sane perspective that wouldn't show Groves.

Agree - but Haye and Groves ARE the Hayemaker stable, are they not? Once Haye retires, unless they recruit an undercards worth of fighters, how can they put on a card? Other people will know the answer to that better than me.
