New trainer
New trainer
Im not one to normally jump on the changing trainer band wagon but ive been thinkign for a while that nathan cleverley and james degale dont have the trainers they need to be at the level that they should be. Nathan the boss in the gym, his father licks his ass and he never gets a telling off in the corner. Also he has no one to train with him, he is top dog in the gym hence why he has nothing to aspire to. Then Jim mcdonell has only ever taken Danny williams to beat a washed up tyson, and herbie hide to defeat a fringe title holder. Jim mcdonell is not a top level trainer. Cleverley needs to go to Joe Gallagher, Oliver Harrison or if he wishes to remain closer to home Gary Lockett. Then Degale has to go to a clever boxing coach. Robert mccraken, Oliver harrison, Jimmy Tibbs, over to america or if he can get him Enzo Calzaghe. Although i dont think degale would be happy with Enzo's discipline. With all the fighters currently leaving farnell also maybe its time to merge farnells gym with bob shannons or joe gallagher. that way Funtime frankie can be surrounded by champs.

Re: New trainer
I always say the same in these situations-go to the states and get top quality sparring and hopefully trainning as well.

Re: New trainer
I actually think Vince and Clev work well, because Dean Powell keeps his feet on the ground and tells him what he needs to hear! Vince obvisouly motivates him and gets him in tip top shape but in the corner he is a bit weak

Re: New trainer
Dean Powell has saved the day in many a corner.
I honestly believe that Joe Calzaghe should have given Dean the 10% after the Bernard Hopkins victory because his old man had no idea how to cope with Hopkins' trickery.

Re: New trainer
Clevs dad is not good anymore. They are shouting names such as Dawson, pascal and hopkins. His dad needs to take a back seat and maybe shadow other coaches teaching clev. Enzo calzaghe was a real good coach IMO. Hopkins is enhancing joe's rep with each passing fight.
Re: New trainer
Yup. Both Degale and Cleverly need new trainers.
Re: New trainer
I think clev is a very good fighter looked in excellent condition and handled a last min opponent very well, he doesnt use his attributes reach etc but is good on the inside for a tall fella like riddick bowe was!! He is always gonna get hit in the style he fights and aggresion he has but isnt that what most of us like?? I think he is doin just fine for a guy at such a young age Keep up the hard work clev looking good to me
P.S. Good to see people noticing Oliver Harrison is a good coach, I have luckily known Oliver for a while and been alongside him in the gym and watching and listening to him is quality the guy has so much knowledge forget about flying to the states we have our own great coaches here!!
Re: New trainer
changing trainer only fixes half the problems with both fighters IMO
both are trained by yes men dont see how "your doing great" in between rounds helps.
both need american sparring and clev needs defencsive work or maybe just a smaller ego and stop tryig to prove his chin.
Im the first to say i love a tear up or a war but why as a fighter would you want to take shots you dont have to.
I saw someone close to clev at the fight on saturday and said shame he got caught with one could of been a different story had the kid been a banger, to which i got the reply dont worry clev has a world class chin.
i nearly turned white why the hell would you want to know if his chin is world class or not at this early stage of hopefully a great career he hasnt beaten anyone yet and i think his defence has to change before he does face anyone.
just to protect my self here i am far from been a clev hater quite the opposite in fact just find it dissapointing that his team seem happy for him to take shots that arent needed to be taken

Re: New trainer
I dont think its his team i just think its his style im sure they dont like him taking them shots on his chin but like you say he needs world class sparring thats something if competing at this level he will need, he is exciting to watch while id rather he had a few more learning fights before becoming a world champion but he is gr8 to watch, shots as fluent and think quite emotional when fighting thats why taking too many getting drawn in etc!! Talented for a guy his age thou! this is a guy who started around a welter/light middle not soo long ago??
Re: New trainer
I think Cleverly is doing fine with his old man in the corner. He's a unbeaten World Champ in his early 20s. I do agree that he does leave himself open way too much and this might be his undoing at world level but who's to say he would listen to a new trainer? He's a clever boy and is used to winning, if it means him ignoring his corner and having a tear up so be it. Dean powell is a big help in the clev corner but I don't think its the case of changing the trainer for Clev I think he just does things his way. If he's ever going to listen to anyone it would be his dad.
I do think a change for Degale would be a good option at this stage. He needs someone to tell him he's not untouchable! George Groves had just beaten Degale last night and the first thing Adam booth said was Groves has soo much still to learn, that will keep Groves feet on the ground whereas Jim Mcdonnell seemed to think DeGale was flawless and a world beater.

Re: New trainer
i think mcdonnell needed the reality check more than degale, i think he just thought degale was his big money maker and now he will have to work for it.
the reason i say they both need new trainers is i have heard they both swan about as top dog in the gyms and do what they want when they want surely a trainer is there to tell you what to do not to tell you your doing great all the time.
both would benefit from stricter camps IMO i get that people say clev is doing fine and really he is but just think he is going the same way as degale. full of himself and that means trouble, be honest if bellew caught him like kuziemski did would clev be world champ???

Re: New trainer
McDonall has had a lot of stick on here after the build up to the Degale fight, I'll go on record here- he's a top bloke, really nice fella. I was pretty suprised by his behaviour at times and the way he came across, but nerves can result in unusual behaviour. I think he's a top bloke and his training record speaks for itself.
Re: New trainer
Fair point, but most people would agree he is a nice bloke, and the pre fight stuff can be excused if it was the main problem. The issue was that there didn't appear to be any tactics short of go out there and beat him. You need more than that for level of Saturdays fight, not to mention the fights that lay ahead in the future. Oliver Harrison is a top bloke, but Khan has come on a lot since moving Stateside, reason's for me being part-coaching, part-sparring. I can't help but think that De Gale could be pushed more behind the scenes than he currently appears to be.Jeff Thomas wrote:McDonall has had a lot of stick on here after the build up to the Degale fight, I'll go on record here- he's a top bloke, really nice fella. Total Agree he could be pushed more behind the scenes and let's face it it's a nice situation to be in rather than some one grafting all day and just not having the ability
Clev and degale sparring each other before the fight was a bit stupid in my opinion lets not forget they was both preparing for there biggest fights of there lives, including clev fighting a world class opponent.
Hayemaker looked at there opponent and got someone who was faster and better to learn things from dirrell degale was sparring clev and boys out army
Is it not degales motto: "train hard fight easy"
I'm not calling either one of them for sparring each other just think there should of been more experience and pedigree in there sparring sessions
