Weight divisions in all time rankings

Post by markt »

Looking through the all-time rankings it appears that boxers are usually listed in the last weight division they fought in. eg Thomas Hearns in the cruiserweight rankings. Is this the criteria used, and if so would it be possible to list them in the division which they fought most times/were most succesful.

The editors are free to assign inactive boxers to a division. But the criteria often are not as clear as one might think.

- boxed most times in division
- most or most valid titles in division
- highest career rating in division
- best average of defeated opponents in division
....

You see the issue?

Personally I would prefer they were included in the division where they gained the highest rating, but I appreciate that this isn't a strightforward issue.

Its very possible Roy Jones was at his peak rating after beating Ruiz.

Should he be considered as a heavyweight?

No

But should Tommy Heards be a cruiserweight? No.

I think it would be best if it went by the division they were at their peak rating, but thats just me.

As I have stated before...

For champs, the weight they had the most title fights at. If there is a tie between divisions, i.e. 4 title fights at 130, 4 at 135... The one of those he was higher rated at.

For non-champs, the weight they had the most fights at. Same here for a tie.

Would work the best, by far.

Why can't boxers be listed in more than one division?

Or

why can't the editors decide which is the most suitable division to put them in?

We can assign them to whatever division. However, one editor may think it should be the divison they last fought. Another might think where the fight had the most success. Thats the dilema.
