Re: is jimmy mac disgraced & finished.
Jim's a good man, but was a bit out of his depth last week. He got a bit carried away with the talent, and just couldn't believe DeGale could lose ( me too ) and when he suddenly realised, it was too bloody late. No plan B at all ( though plan A and plan B for Degale should have been: THROW MORE PUNCHES ).
As Gomez says, the sight of a calm collected Booth telling Groves exactly what to do, then cutting to a gibbering jimmy Mac going "LISTEN ! LISTEN ! YOU'RE STRONG ! LISTEN !! YOU GOTTA WIN THIS FIGHT ! " was a bit of an eye opener.
I think no way Warren leaves his star talent in the hands of Jimmy Mac and no one else: he'll be bringing someone else on board ASAP. Maybe Jim should stay on a conditioner.

Thats what I think.MightyWarrior wrote: I think no way Warren leaves his star talent in the hands of Jimmy Mac and no one else: he'll be bringing someone else on board ASAP. Maybe Jim should stay on a conditioner.
Clearly James & Jimmy have a bond and that should remain - but technical duties and corner work should be overseen by a more tactical, thinking trainer.
It's not a bad thing to have an extra pair of hands involved, as long as the team gels correctly.
Re: is jimmy mac disgraced & finished.
A close loss in a tactical fight does not, (or should not), mean that either trainer or fighter are finished.
Jimmy Mac got a bit carried away and said some daft stuff, as did DeGale (and so have most of us at one time or another). I imagine he feels a bit of a tool at the minute but it will blow over.
Worse things happen at sea; Macdonnell is still a capable trainer, Degale is still a very good prospect. A loss will do him good in the long run. I don't think Macdonnell is a very nasty man, he's just been a bit of a dick lately; (but if DeGale had won there wouldn't be the half of all this).

I think Jim Mcdonnell is a great trainer, its just a glitch in the works, they will come back, but degale needs to gett the public on his side

Re: is jimmy mac disgraced & finished.
Yes he is finished with Degale I think.
Still feel a lot of people on here arent giving Groves the credit he is due.
I dont think i have ever seen a trainer behave like that at a press conference. Best thing would be for Degale to leave the country (seems to be a trend here with top Olympian moving away) go to America and learn the hard way.
DeGale is an ok fighter - the division in the UK isnt that great; at world level still think both Groves and DeGale would be shown up - but they are both young guys who have singlehandedly got people talking about boxing good or bad in this country again - well done

Re: is jimmy mac disgraced & finished.
McConnell is nothing short of a joke. Sorry, he's so far up Degales ass it's cringe-worthy.
Re: is jimmy mac disgraced & finished.
'great' is not a word i would describe him as, no way. he is an ok fitness trainer.......and a poor boxing coach. period.clunkclik wrote:I think Jim Mcdonnell is a great trainer, its just a glitch in the works, they will come back, but degale needs to gett the public on his side

And how do you get that? have you watched him? you been to the gym? he has had success, and he was a succesful amateur and pro. he willstay with degale and others,rhino222 wrote:'great' is not a word i would describe him as, no way. he is an ok fitness trainer.......and a poor boxing coach. period.clunkclik wrote:I think Jim Mcdonnell is a great trainer, its just a glitch in the works, they will come back, but degale needs to gett the public on his side

Re: is jimmy mac disgraced & finished.
The hype if you want to call it that coming from Degale and McDonnell was disgusting and in some ways it is a blessing Degale lost, otherwise can you imagine the monster it would have created if Degale had prevailed.
The sh it that was coming out of McDonnell was very surprising as it seems he is a good bloke, he didnt show it in the lead up to this fight though.
What is worse than all the banter/hype or whatever you want to call it, is the sheer arrogance of not having a plan b despite Degale bragging that if Groves ran the fight would last a couple of rounds longer!!!

I like his enthusiasm, and he's an interesting character. Early on in the degale v groves saga, he made some interesting points, which just turned out to wrong, that's all.
That said, the 'wanker' sign (which, I understand is celebrating it's 40th anniversary next year) from Booth was spot on.
All that 'bet you 20 grand' stuff was ridiculous. He should apologise to Booth for his childish behaviour.

Re: is jimmy mac disgraced & finished.
Also to add - despite whatever the boards views were on the bets Groves and Booth would not have accepted them, even though you notice Degale and McDonnell did not say a word about them.
The time after the fight was for Team Degale to act like men and admit to a few things, they could not even bring themselves to be gracious in defeat to Team Groves.

sorry but i stand by my comments, apart from his fitness training, what evidence have you got to suggest that jimmy mac is a good boxing coach. who has he developed, who has he 'brought on', who has he 'fine tuned' from being a pretender to a contender>Dan Dares wrote:Poor boxing coach? Is it true that Jim McDonnell is giving 20k to charity after losing the bet?
He promised Degale was on a completely different level and it would probably be all over in the first round. I understand being confident about your fighter but he rather over did things and now looks a bit silly. Especially since after the fight there still wasn't much grace from the Degale camp.

Given that DeGale lost by a single point, and the two knew eachother's styles so well, I think people are going well overboard in their criticism of McDonnell.ThereByTheGrace wrote:Yes he is finished with Degale I think.

And no, I'm not him, we just happen to have the same name.

no, I am an anaesthetic/resus practitioner actually !! ......clunkclik wrote:are you a coach?rhino222 wrote:sorry but i stand by my comments, apart from his fitness training, what evidence have you got to suggest that jimmy mac is a good boxing coach. who has he developed, who has he 'brought on', who has he 'fine tuned' from being a pretender to a contender>Dan Dares wrote: Poor boxing coach? and yes.....have actually seen him in the gym although its a few years back, yes i have watched him, many times from ringside,... and he has had only limited success.clunkclik wrote:And how do you get that? have you watched him? you been to the gym? he has had success, and he was a succesful amateur and pro. he willstay with degale and others,rhino222 wrote:'great' is not a word i would describe him as, no way. he is an ok fitness trainer.......and a poor boxing coach. period.clunkclik wrote:I think Jim Mcdonnell is a great trainer, its just a glitch in the works, they will come back, but degale needs to gett the public on his side
the fact he was a decent amateur and pro does not mean he is up to much as a coach.
Re: is jimmy mac disgraced & finished.
examples..... a decent trainer would have had takaloo keeping his chin on his chest as he threw his right hook, a decent trainer would have danny williams learning to use the ramrod jab he was blessed with to keep opponents at bay so they cant set up their own attacks...a decent trainer would have a plan B for degale when plan A did not even nearly germinate.
unfortunately Jimmy Mac is the 'donnay' of trainers.

he'll make sure degale gets to the top, given the level of investment that degale is, so you would expect serious changes.G0mez wrote:I think the fact that Warren himself was dashing to the corner to personally issue instructions told a thousand words.
"I'm amazed he never even threw the uppercut" Warren sighed afterwards "Maybe the back slappers will all go now"
Frank is ruthless. He spotted big errors in the corner and it's unlikely he'll not have plans for an overhaul being put together as this is written.
I think a new chief trainer will come into play. Hopefully he will remain part of the team for fitness duties.

Try and offer a civil opinion one way or the other.Chambers2 wrote:What a dickhead thread title!!
There have been rumours he and degale were finished and warren wanted him out, and there were plenty of posters here objecting to some of his antics in the prefight (ie disgraceful antics).....so i stand by my thread title. It was asking a question it wasnt making a statement so the only dickhead is you for your reacting like such a neanderthal to it.

Re: is jimmy mac disgraced & finished.
My view is admit Jimmy Mac that your charge Degale didn't do enough to win, you'll save face by actually admitting you were way, way off the result. Many of us were, I thought Degale was a far superior fighter, and I think I know my boxing. I was way, way off.
Degale - you didn't even come close to backing up your boasts, Jimmy Mac dito. Neither of you will improve if you can't form an objective, accurate view of what went on. Yes the loss hurts, but failure to observe your own shortcomings as trainer/fighter will only serve to stunt any progress and potential.
Degale was clueless how to pin down a surprisingly evasive Groves - and seemingly Jimmy Mac was equally as clueless in giving advice.
Hard to imagine Jo Gallagher not offering the right words...
