Samuel Peter.
Samuel Peter.
Below is the preview I have done for Peter's next fight over at Boxingpredictions - anyone think an upset might happen. I have heard mixed views on his opponent, Tarus Sykes. He's is apparently got Jordan esque boobies but has been described as a decent boxer with decent stamina.
I'm not convinced about Peter and think he can get easily outboxed, is Sykes the man to do it. I've been speaking to some serious gamblers and they call Sykes a live dog.
Anyway, here is the preview.
Two heavyweight prospects collide in the big American bout of the week as current the undefeated current USBA champion, Samuel Peter, takes on the current NABF champion, Taurus Sykes, in a unification match of sorts. The big punching Nigerian, who is ranked in the worlds top ten by the WBC, IBF and WBO, will be the favourite going into this bout as he has looked destructive in his last three bouts. However, Sykes is a skilled boxer whose only defeat came on points versus Owen Beck, who himself is in the top twelve by the 3 leading governing bodies. The native New Yorker is coming off a career best win with a comprehensive points win over Friday Ahunanyna to win the NABF crown and also holds a spirit draw over former Cruiserweight champion, Imamu Mayfield. Whilst the extra power and the youth of Peter should be enough, Sykes certainly has the ability to pose many questions and an upset is a distinct possibility.

Has anybody on the UK forum seen Peter in action yet? I'd like to see for myself if the guy really is something to get excited about or if people are just getting excited due to the dearth of good prospects. We know he's punchy, but has he got enough skills to overcome the kind of problems David Tua had in his biggest fights?
Good assessment, they are the fights I have seen of him aswell.nickd wrote:I've seen his fights with Williams and Diaz. I think Tua is a good comparison, although he is a little bigger but he's lacking technique in the same way. A good tall guy like Klitschko could keep him at a distance quite easily.
Lets see him beat a top 10 guy before spunking our pants.
"Spunking your pants" <--- lol, i don't even know what that means. I like lurking and reading over here but some of the stuff you guys say goes right over my head.
Anyway, I am one that really likes Peter and thinks he's going to be a top 5 fighter. My biggest concern with him is, how will he do against a really big good fighter? The only guy he has fought who was bigger than him was Lyle McDowell (who?), so i hardly think that counts. Peter has the talent to KO someone early, and has proven he can win the 10 round decisions also.
I believe Peter is getting too much hype right now, but at the same time I think he will deserve the hype later. But i agree with most that what has he really done to deserve it now. But he's still only 24 years old, he has a lot of time to learn and develope yet. I don't see any reason for him to rush at this point.
But my boxingpredicitons.net pick is ... Peter KO 4

Has anybody seen Peter Vs Charles Shufford? its the blueprint of how to beat Peter
Peter won the fight on points, but Shufford caused him all sorts of problems because he was able to box on the back foot. If you pepper Peter from the outside he's got no answer to it, somebody who has got good handspeed, good stamina and a decent defence will outbox Peter comfortably.
Peters got fantastic power and you can tell by just looking at him that he's got a rock solid jaw, but as has been said he is a plodder with limited boxing skills.
If you fight him you are fucked. If you box him on the back foot and get in, get your punches off and get out quickly he is very beatable. If he catches you clean though it is game over

Could it be that Peter learned how to beat this particular style after that fight? Meaning by watching it and seeing what he did wrong and then sparring against fighters who mimmick that style?Chesney_Chambers wrote: Peter won the fight on points, but Shufford caused him all sorts of problems because he was able to box on the back foot. I'm not saying this is what happened, but it is possible. Its hard to judge a certain fighter by only one fight. That is why so many fighters who lose the first fight vs. someone, win the re-match. They learn what they did wrong and how to beat a certain style (Tarver vs. Jones, Tarver vs. Johnson, etc.)
Thanks Stu
Chambers, just say what you mean: Audley can beat Peter easy.Chesney_Chambers wrote:Has anybody seen Peter Vs Charles Shufford? its the blueprint of how to beat Peter

I actually agree, to be honest. Harrison should try and line up a fight with Peter. Big Sam is developing a name for himself, but I think Audley could outbox him on the outside. And if Audley is prepared to let his hands go, he could hurt the guy. He needs to do it soon though.

I agree that Peter will have tried to learn from that fight and prepare himself in training, I just don't think that Peter has the speed or boxing ability to get to someone who can keep him at a distance, he would need to improve on one of these aspects a considerable amount to be able to beat this type of fighter IMOBtownjay wrote:Could it be that Peter learned how to beat this particular style after that fight? I wasn't particularly tailoring that post for Audley, its just what I feel. Watch the Peter Vs Shufford fight and tell me that you don't feel the same.states wrote:Chambers, just say what you mean: Audley can beat Peter easy.Chesney_Chambers wrote:Has anybody seen Peter Vs Charles Shufford? its the blueprint of how to beat Peter

Although Audley does fit the bill
Chambers, I'm agreeing with you. less of the
man.
Do you not think that Audley should be trying to fight Peter as soon as possible? Peter is rising fast, due to the fact that he knocks people out. I think he can be outboxed quite easily. Harrison could keep him on the end of that southpaw jab, and then let go with the left hand once Peter gets fed-up. It's a great match for Audley to take.

I think Audley will be gunning for Peter after another fight possibly 2

The Nigerian heavyies are built tall and strong and arte pretty good movers. If any of them learns also to box, move, measure the range and counter well then you have something very close to the full package.Max Molyneux wrote:He beat Peter too in the Olympic qualifiers.
Are Nigerian fighters hard hitters or is it just Hide, Peter and Ike?
But that doesnt mean any of tghem will be stellar. A good trainer, discipline and good matching when they move up are necessary for experience and confidence. If you get all that you get something like Ibeabuchi if he stayed out of prison. A big puncher that boxes well, can take a punch and is technically sound. Best ever?? Maybe not, but pretty good by any standard.
If a serious promoter were hungry enough and far seeing enough, they would be scouring Nigeria and Kenya for heavyweight talents. Unfortunatel they just wait until someone comes to the States before they even consider them.
There is enormous talent pool in Africa (not just Nigeria).
