Burns-Cook set for July 16

After a spectacular title winning effort against a top fighter it has been three mediocre challengers in a row. When is Ricky Burns going to step it up?

Cook on his A-Game is a world class fighter IMO. This is a good matchup for Burns, who I think should win and move onto a unification!

Decent opponents cost money. Sky won't pay.

Re: Burns-Cook set for July 16
since when has a 6 round points win over Youssef Al Hamidi warranted a world title shot??
Fair play Burns won the belt against a good fighter, but his opponents since then have all been piss poor, its as if they want to make a few quid out of him until he has to step up, looks like they have no faith in Burns.

Burns has been getting plenty of criticism and rightfully so, but at least the won the title against a fairly decent champion as the underdog and earned the right to be called a champion. Cleverly still has it all to do in most peoples eyes.Cardiff-Lad1 wrote:And people are already moaning about the standard of opponents Cleverlys will face in his reign as champ before its barely begun....
Need to look a bit closer to home!
You can accept him having an easy first defense of the title but there's no justifying Burns last Defence and now fighting Cook who's coming off a 2 year lay off and a 6 round win over a journey man?!?
Cook is an improvement on the previous 2 as a former title holder and it should be a good little fight, although it is a shame that Cook hasn't been made to do more in order to get the shot. Hopefully should Burns win then he can actually get a unification match sorted. Imo Cook is still a better option that a fight against Sykes which some people seemed keen on.
Re: Burns-Cook set for July 16
Burns needs to step up soon this fight is uninteresting and the winner is obvious, he hasn't fought anyone ranked in top 50 (on here) since hes been champion and Cook and Lareya are ranked outside top 100. Burns is becoming like one of thos German 'world' champs who just fights nobodies
Re: Burns-Cook set for July 16
think we all saw that one coming , typical warren bring back a "Name" against a journey man then propells him into world title fight
Cook is very good fighter so maybe after shaking the rust off he will be able to get back to decent level
Burns should be too sharp for him though
would have preffered Burns in the Summer Stadium against Fana that was talked about

Ridiculous.
Re: Burns-Cook set for July 16
To be honest this just discredits the WBO as a 'World title'. How is it justified?
Re: Burns-Cook set for July 16
This was predictable, UD win for Burns, I think he's aiming to beat Calzaghe's 20 WBO defences record!

If he keeps up with the calibre of opponents he's faced so far, he could take one on every month and eclipse it in a couple of yearsThe_Don1 wrote:This was predictable, UD win for Burns, I think he's aiming to beat Calzaghe's 20 WBO defences record!

I wouldn't say they have no faith in him. I'm sure he's ready and willing to fight the best i just hope his team are too. Cook provides a tough challenge but he's been away for a while. I think he would stop him.saturday_kid wrote:since when has a 6 round points win over Youssef Al Hamidi warranted a world title shot??

What's wrong with his management trying to make him good money??
Ricky works in a sport shop as far as I know so if he can make some retirement money before he loses his title then fair play, I am sure he is in the game to make coin, not satisfy fans bloodlust!
I think he is a good boxer but when he fights a real top level guy he will get beat, nae shame in that though. He has had his fair share of gruelling fights so far in his career as well.

Yeah sure, fornicate the fans. So long as Burns is well paid for making title defences against guys well below world level, why should any fans care?? Surely all we should care about is Burns making a good living fighting easy opponents eh??
To be honest, I actually think Burns will be matched in a unification in the future and agree that the guy has stepped up to the plate quite a few times in his career (Earl, Arthur, Johanneson, Martinez). But don't start telling people they shouldn't be disappointed with his championship level competition

So, to satisfy the WBO's ranking system, its seems as a super-feather you need to be able to beat youseff al hamedi? Cook did at the weekend, and gets his shot. Burns fought al hamedi last may, and got his shot in september! All super -feathers are going to be gunning for Youseff...

Al Hamidi has some resume. A plethora of champions. British,Euro and 2 world. Only Gomez has stopped him. Tough boy so he is.
Re: Burns-Cook set for July 16
July 16th.
WBO title in Liverpool.
After a convincing stoppage loss, Cook has clawed his way back into contention with a win over the likes of Youssef Al Hamidi (and thats it.)
Nothing wrong with the match up- but "World" title. This has a WBU feel to it.

Yes, but he isn't really "world" level opposition, is he?ShadrachSimmo wrote:Al Hamidi has some resume. A plethora of champions. British,Euro and 2 world. Only Gomez has stopped him. Tough boy so he is.
If he did beat Cook on Saturday, would he be fighting for the WBO belt? Of course not.
Really, I think Cook should have done more to earn crack at the title. Other than being a former holder I can't see what his claim is.
