I thought personally that Quartey beat Oscar. Oscar was gunshy for most of that fight while Quartey was coming foward firing out the jab. Oscar never woke till the last round. Other than that Quartey won most of the rounds comfortably with workrate imo.

Oscar has in fact seemingly gone out of his way to ruin a few fights that could have been great. The second Mosley fight and Felix Trinidad came out to make great fights but Oscar ran, and of course payed for it in the end.

Have to say I would be happy to watch either DLH-Vargas or DLH-Wright. I think DLH beats Vargas in an exciting fight and loses close (and competitive) fight against Winky. A match up with Trinidad would not be interesting. What about Vargas-Mayorga, now that's a fight where you'd see some action.

Seems people either love him or hate him. Fact is he was never going to dominate one weight it was clear he was going to move through the divisions from early on.

To be honest I really dont see how non fighters such as ourselves can sit here and call him a pussy and call him names when he's won multiple world titles at 5/6 different weights.

He has fought against Hopkins, Mosley, Campas, Vargas, Gatti, Trinidad, Quartey, Chavez, Whittaker and many others.

He has been taking part in world championship fights for over 10 years.

Give the guy some credit for fucks sake.

This De La Hoya bashing is getting beyond pathetic!

The fact is you can pick holes in anyones record the way people pick holes in his if you're being really fussy about it. I could sit here and dissect Hopkins, Mosley, Trinidad - anyones record basically in the same manner but I wouldnt bother.

He fought the NAMES, but did he fight the REAL CHAMPION?

Don't ever say Campas again either, that was a mismatch, and even HBO cussed him for that one.

Why knock De La Hoya, he fought some great champs and some great challengers. He's won belts against the best, he made fights people wanted to see and that's probably one of the reasons he never cleaned out a division like Hopkins has. People wanted him to move around in weight and make exciting PPV events.

The people who say these things out him fighting champions past their prime are disrespecting the likes of Chavez and Whittaker, ask them if they wanted to fight De La Hoya and ask them what they thought their chances of beating him were, they were confident going into the fights and why shouldn't they be they are/were great champions. De La Hoya’s record is a who’s who of boxing in his era and he deserves credit.

Message to Oscar “Fight whoever the hell you like, we’ll still be there supporting you!!!!”

I neither love nor hate DLH, but he has picked and chosen his opponents very carefully, and to compare him with Leonard (something I did in the past myself) is not quite right. Leonard may have chosen his fights carefully late in his career, but as his peak faced the very best in the division, Benitez, Duran, Hearns, to name but a few, even the second tier fighters on his ledger were impressive.

Sure, the rematch with Duran was carefully orchestrated, and he waited till Hagler was slipping, but Hagler was far from shot, and I doubt anyone else would have been able to do what Leonard did after 3 years out of the ring.

Oscar's career looks impressive, but he never truly dominated any division he was in.

Why on earth is he calling out Trinidad, Trinidad already said he retired and looked terrible against Winky.

James, I do disagree somewhat here.

You (and a few others) are knocking Whittikar and Chavez as past it fighters and DLH knew this. I can partially see where you are coming from but I do disagree. Yes, no doubt Chavez and Whittikar were not the fighters they once were no doubt, but they were still the #1 in the devision at the time of the distance (Chavez after the rematch proving he had something left by drawing with Gonzales). Check out the magazines at the time, Chavez was ranked #1 by everybody and Whittikar was still talked off in P4P sense when they clashed. Many experts dubbed the fight a clash between the P4P #2 and #3 fighters, with Whittikar holding the #2 spot.

So for me this doesn't equate to DLH purposefully not fighting the best, because they were considered the best - especially Chavez (in a somewhat weakend devision), in Whittikars case people were starting to discuss Trinidad granted.

The second argument point is the impression that DLH was carefully matched throughout his career and "waited" for the fighters to look shot before fighting them. I disagree, he couldn't have had the Chavez fight much earlier than he did, I mean it was only 4 years after he turned pro (two weight devisions below) and only 2 years after he first won a world title. In my opinion, Chavez wasn't the same fighter after (or maybe before) the first Meldrick Taylor fight - certainly his aura of invincability had gone with that fight. That battle took place before Oscar had won the Olympics - so it wasn't like the Hagler vs Leonard situation in which there was two guys of a similar age and came out of retirment because he specifically saw (and said in commentary) that the other was slipping. Leonard waited specifically for that moment, DLH had no challenges left at Lightweight (after unifying) so moved up to fight the number 1 guy.

Also, what annoys me with these anti DLH threads is that they are looked quite bias. Its DLH that is "pussing" out by calling out a "shot to shit" Trinidad. NOBODY has ever said Trinidad has pussed out of giving DLH a much deserving rematch after a very contentious decision. Let alone the arguments that Trinidad is only 32 and looked explosive vs Mayorga and perhaps it was Winky style that effected him, or the fact he was facing the naturally bigger man (which neither DLH or Mayorga are).

Also, I cannot believe the title of the thread - Accusing DLH of pussing out of a fight with a bulked up Super Feather, and yet he calls out an exceptional Light Middle / Middle. It seems to be forgoten that he called out Winky Wright.

My god if Winky vs DLH happens I would be delighted, Winky is the best light middle in the world by far (at this moment) and could be the best Middleweight, if given the opportunity.

Winky would be only the fourth top fighter I'd rate DLH for fighting...

Thats beyond harsh.

So how many top fighters would you say Hopkins or Trinidad have fought by the same estimation?

Who then? He is the number 1 fighter in one devision, 2 or 3 in another and in the form of his life.

Hopkins is a different kettle of fish, he fought who they put in fronmt of him, Oscar had the luxury of choosing his opponents and consistently chose people who were past it. In fact, I'll rate him for fighting Vargas as well in fact. the naturally bigger man...but people like Charpentier, Campas, OLD Chavez, OLD whitaker who made him look shit, Jimmy Bredahl, Arturo Gatti wewre all nothing compared to him....

And Trinidad, since he won his title, his record was a lot lot more impressive, and the fashion he won in as well...

Whittaker and Chavez were champions at the time and the top men in their respective divisions so you cant pull that one out. Yes they were past their best no doubt but unless he fought them when he was still a superfeather then how could he have got them any sooner?
