Tony "Doc" Doherty

Post by black panther »

He hasn't fought in almost 2 years. Has he packed in it? He had a lot of hype behind him when he first turned pro.

And on a related note, he is the absolute spits of top twenty tennis player Stanislas Wawrinka IMO:

He fought geraint harvey last at light middle and got stopped. I used to follow his career big time, thought he would at least hold an ibo or wbu title. He was meant to fight brook a few years ago. Last i seen him he was like 14 stone. One of the cases of having so much talent coupled with a lack of dedication. Used to read about him being able to do things in the gym that others could only dream of. massive shame

He's pulled out of fights since his last one, citing injury and fitness issues. I believe Gary Lockett has decided not to chase him up anymore - up to Tony to show some dedication.

I'm still hopeful for a turn around - such a talent. I really think talent wise he is a match for Brook.

Agreed in flashes he looked brilliant. But he lacked consistency and his conditioning seemed an issue. Even at 147lbs I thought he looked "fleshy". As you say maybe it's a problem with dedication. I hope he comes back in any case and gives it one more go. Anyone know the circumstances of his loss to the journeyman Harvey? Very surprising loss there.

I remember going down to Cardiff to watch him fight Barrie Jones and thinking "jesus, he could really do something at Lightweight"

Looking at his frame it seemed attainable. Then I saw that he got knocked out in 3 last year weighing 154lb, I was genuinely saddened. Exciting fighter.

Hiya guys, I normally just read the forums but after reading this post decided to get let you know the real story.

Tony Doherty is one of the most talented kids I've worked with. Back at the start of 2010, Gavin Rees, Bradley Pryce and Tony Doherty decided it was time for a change and left Enzo to start afresh under me at Fight Academy Wales (Darren Wilson's gym). Tony and I were at the same amateur club under Tony Williams and then both under Brian Hughes in Manchester so we go back years, he is my friend and I'd never run him down but what a massive waste of talent!! I never talk about sparring outside of the gym but I've seen Tony make world champions look completely clueless in sparring. His problem is that I just don't think he wants to fight, I think his Dad Simon wants him to fight more than he does. I pulled him off a bill 10 days before he was due to fight back in December because he was 12 lbs overweight - he could have lost the weight but thats not the way I work. Unfortunately he has never been back to the gym since then. He is under a management contract with me and my door is always open if he can dedicate himself to the gym and his diet which he's never been able to do!

Tony is a very respectful lad and a brilliant fighter and there isn't a day that goes past when I don't wonder what he could have done with his God-given talent. He raced to 20-0 without ever training hard and never ever running! Breaks my heart :(

I remember thinking he was going to be a bit special early on, but in hindsight the opponent level back then flattered him. The reality check came when he started fighting guys with winning records. Very flashy fighter but he just didn't seem to have any pop in his punches.

Still a bit surprised he didn't even make it to british title level though.

The lack of pop in his punches you talk about is because he was fighting at a weight that was way above what he should have been. In the amateurs he had around 30 ko's where he was either stopping guys with body shots or knocking them flat out. I know that Jimmy McDonnell rated him very highly when he trained him, the reality was that for his fight with McIntyre he lost something like 50lbs in four weeks to make weight. I believe if he had really applied himself then he could have been a real world champion, not just a paper champion.

I sparred with him a few years ago in Manchester. Thought he was good, but not dedicated and thus knew he'd never do anything.

Yep.

As far as I'm concerned, a lot of boxing observers seem to forget that mental talent is more important that physical talent. We always hear "Mr X is such a waste of talent, his handspeed is amazing" but all of that stuff means very little vs someone with the right mindset. Groves vs Degale is a very recent example of this.

I believe "talent" is a fallacy anyway. Don't want to get too much into it on here because I cba to write long posts and go back and forth.

I read interviews with jim mcdonell, brian hughes and james cook all mentioning tony doherty as the gifted one. I believe one of them was referring to a drill about when your meant to stand with your back foot on a piece of toilet paper, here you avoid punches and throw some back without moving back foot. if the paper is ripped then you fail. Believe they said no one could do it perfect with the exception of doc. He is also phenomenol on the floor to ceiling ball. He made Barrie Jones look like a journeyman, which not even brook or m'baye could do.

I second all of this.

30 stoppages in amateur is unheard of. I know he lost to ali nuuemembe in commonwealth games on a cut but he was well on his way to winning that match until then. I don't understand many of the arm chair posters on boxrec that just disregard and disagree with the opinion of someone in the know. Its no wonder they rarely post on here. Gary Lockett is very knowledgeable about the subject and some of you think "yeah but he is wrong". He fought ryan rhodes, trained with several champs so is therefore in a position to judge the standard which doc was at. Same thing with Smigga, Bellew, Larry Olubamwa, and frankie gavin. Surely theyre opinions must be respected as they are the ones who have been there and done it, they climb through the ropes. To be entirely honest, if there was no pro's posting on this forum then it would be a pretty boring one like all the others.

Geraint Harvey, who against all expectations stopped Tony in three, was a fairly busy journeyman fighter but has since only had one fight. Given the recent elightening articles about journeymen I did wonder briefly whether Geraint had broken some unwritten rule about not beating the home fighter - suffering the penalty of not getting the call from promoters again. Surely not?
