How much longer do you plan on fighting and what will you do when your boxing career ends?

I will keep fighting professionally as long as I can still win. When my boxing career is finished I intend to have more sex.

Nice to have a hobby for retirement.

Well, he's right in that activity is one of the keys to beating Froch (see Kessler, or even Magee and Adamu, who came pretty close to outboxing Froch through volume as much as anything else). I think, however, that he's going to be surprised what a pain in the arse Froch is to hit when he's got his boxing brain on - even Dirrell has said that Froch is awkward to hit, and Johnson doesn't move anything like Dirrell nor have his speed.

His main shot is to outwork Froch without succumbing to Froch's strength; Johnson is tough as old boots, no doubt, but I don't see him as being stronger or more powerful than Froch, nor having better skills (although that sneaky looping right hand he put Woods on queer street and Jones to sleep with might well come into play, given Froch's habit of keeping the left hand low and trying to set traps for opponents by drawing them in). I've definitely not seen Froch out-strengthed in there, not even by Pascal, who is an absolute powerhouse at light-heavy (let alone super-middle), and you would think Johnson will have to do just that to land enough inside on Froch. I don't see Froch as a big hitter at this level, and so I don't think Froch is going to catch him coming in and stop him, but equally I've never seen anyone fail to respect Froch's power; Johnson is not going to be able to just walk him down. It'll all depend on whether Froch can move for 12 rounds (after Abraham, I think he can) and whether Johnson can deal with Froch's jab, awkwardness and sheer physical strength.

Excellent post and agree with pretty much everything you've said. At the risk of sounding pedantic, the only bit I'd take issue with is the Magee reference - I was there that night and while Magee made himself an 'irritant' with his volume Carl was in control of the fight and never really at risk of being outboxed over any consistent period fo time. It was more he was spendiing too long looking for the 'money shot' after his success in the first round.. in contrast to Naz I think Carl's gone the other way in that he used to be in love with his power, but has now realised that at world level you can't rely on that and has adapted accordingly, the AA fight being the perfect example.

Johnson would have beaten the young Froch that fought Adamu in his 11th fight.

I think he's got the style to really give Froch problems, bowling that right hand over the top and bullying forward.

But Carl is so strong it's outrageous - and a spiteful puncher. I think once Johnson feels that, he will think twice. He'll need to be prepared to take a serious shellacking to outwork Froch.

Who knows, he may well be prepared to do so, given the final is on the horizon.

Personally I think Johnson would have loved a Ward fight, as Andre isn't heavy handed and fancies fighting on the inside quite a bit himself and Johnson would have loved that.

^^ aye you maye be right there gomez

i would like to see Ward tries elbow - glen smashes him with overhand right... ward sticks head in face - Johnson pushes him off and smashes him in the balls

i think most boxing fans would get a kick from watching Ward get the sh1t fouled out of him.

I agree.

Ward seems a good guy, very professional and determined.

Strip that away and there is tinge of ugliness to his work. He's had the softest run of all the S6 entrants and would have wondered how he would have faired against Kessler in Herning, Abraham in Germany and say Taylor in his opening fight. Or even Dirrell.

Maybe he would have won regardless, I wouldn't have bet my money on it though. If Carl gets to the final, he's done it in much harder fashion, on the road against a must-win last chance Kessler and Abraham. His home fight was against an extremely sneaky and slippery Dirrell.

If Kessler turned up in Notts in his first fight, he'd have lost on that effort. That victory seems to put Ward right up on an unjustified pedestal for me.

3 fights in Oakland, 1 in Cali - not cool by Showtime at all.

I'd have picked Dirrell to beat him too. He doesn't have the power to dictate anyone and Dirrell is a purer boxer.

The difference here is that Johnson throws alot more punches than Abraham, when Johnson fouight Mack he averaged 50 jabs a round and 85 punches overall a round.
When Froch fought Abraham he didn't have to concern himself as much with what was coming back at him, in volume of punches, so it was easier for him to get set to throw his own leading punches.

Footwork here is the key for Froch, make the older man Johnson work to close the distance, thus making him think more about what to throw.

I'm a massive follower of Froch but Ward is head and shoulders above these lot! He will go through his whole career undefeated and will be in the top five lb for lb next year.

(1) Ward
(2) Froch / Bute
(3) Kessler
(4) Johnson
(5) Dirrell

yup, also agreed

i never would have thought, 4 years or more back, that I would be factoring Froch's footwork into the equation as a key part of his gameplan for winning a fight.... :o :TU:
