Pro boxers / Trainers

Post by horndawg80 »

Can a pro boxer or trainer answer this for me please?

How many times a year should you (as a pro boxer) be fighting? Say for example you are an English / Welsh / Irish / Scottish champ or better........(That kind of standard)

I realise it does depend on how grueling a fight can be and if you receive any injuries from a fight.

I find it somewhat incomprehensible that some pro boxers do not fight for say 18 months......most bizarre.

Minimum of 6, or 3-4 for 12 rounders

Ok, I am neither a pro boxer or trainer ......

Purely on boxing, I would have thought that a novice pro should be boxing at least every 6 - 8 weeks for the first couple of years (I think that Tyson was put on a "program" to box every 4 weeks at the beginning).

When you get to domestic title level, they should still box at least 4 or 5 times a year.

The problem is economics - a pro boxes depending on his ability to sell tickets, and it is difficult to ask the same friends and family to fork out £40 too often (particularly if the fights / bills are not exactly "competitive" - but that is another topic !)

imo if you have a good prospect its worth paying him a few hundred quid on top of whatever he does on tickets and take a bit of a hit on it whilst his name is being built up in lower key undercard bouts , that way theres not too much pressure on them to be constantly selling tickets and if there as good as you hope then the reward will outweigh the intial outlay in the end

I think more boxers should take a look at the Mexican's and other south American's as they seem to fight a lot more than anyone else. You only have to look at Julio Cesar Chavez Snr who had over 100 fights and probably 75% of them at top level and even world title fights less than 4 weeks apart. Some boxers are either lazy or not getting the oppertunities, either way something needs to change.
