After he got pasted, John paced around the ring, leaned over the top rope and yelled 'I'm a gypsy man! I'm a gypsy man!' at the crowd over and over again. At no stage did he refer to himself as a 'pikey', therefore the term may be perjorative.
There is some stereotypical bs going on in this thread
Lads Let me clarify I am a true Romany gypsy ...and using the words Pikey or gyppo toward one of our kind, be it Irish or Romany traveler it is very offensive and can be likened to calling a black guy ni66er, most people that use it do so knowing full well how offensive it is ...if you know full well and been told how offensive a word it is, then why carry on using it ? Like i said i think its more a reflection on the people that use it ..rather than me or my ethnic culture ;;-)

Mr P, help us out: As a Romany do you consider yourself different to an Irish traveller, or is a gypsy a gypsy, end of. There is a fair deal of racism among black people, Africans towards West Indians and vice versa, and I'm wondering if there's anything similar in the gypsy world.

Yes; I'm sure they'd consider how insulting and hurtful they had been, consider their ways and decide to change their behaviour and words with more consideration.
