I know we do Martin. I have neighbours who are rude, boorish, rude and inconsiderate. In Doncaster we have a large traveller community and more than a few settled in houses. The very vast majority are no trouble whatsoever, they live their lives and bother no one. There is a minority that cause a bad name for the majority. No offence, as I said earlier I know a couple who lived on camps, one was very bad and one was a decent (though crooked) man. I'm no angel.Londonirish wrote:simon fox wrote:Yes; I'm sure they'd consider how insulting and hurtful they had been, consider their ways and decide to change their behaviour and words with more consideration.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote: I come from a town with a large 'settled traveller community'. I suspect if someone was, and it was pointed out to said traveller, they would immediately rectify their behaviour and never use it again.

BTW guys the term Gorga ent a derogatory term and is not a slur...its just a word we use to refer to non gypsy's/travelers .
I have never known real gypsy's being offended by being called gypsy's ether ,Pikey or gyppo yeh...but most only dare call us that on forums ;;-)

To be honest though mate, it's taken these forums for me to realise pikey is offensive. I was using the word all the time before getting called up on it and I know a few others who thought it was harmless too.mrpedigree wrote:Yes Glyn we are a separate breed the English and Irish , but we get along most of the time lolGlyn Leach wrote:

Travellers/gypsies might not intend 'gorger' to be derogatory. That doesn't mean non-travellers like being called it! Same logic can apply to the words you don't like.mrpedigree wrote: Yes Glyn we are a separate breed the English and Irish , but we get along most of the time lol

I take Ian's greater point — one rule for everyone — but personally I don't mind being called gorger, whitey, taff or anything else — except Cockney, I'm Acton born and bred and we are not Cockneys. For some reason that one gets to me, even though I've lived in the East End for the best part of 20 years. And I must point out, East Enders would never call me a Cockney, they know the difference. And I'm going to stop rambling on now.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Travellers/gypsies might not intend 'gorger' to be derogatory. That doesn't mean non-travellers like being called it! Gorger or gadjé in Rrom proper is our word for you, just like Gypsy is your word for us. If it comes out sounding derogatory, well, just think about how the word Gypsy is normally used, the inflection on it. It's (the colouration of the word by its context) the same thing, I think.
If anyone is interested, I know people who have made it their life's work over the last twenty years going over the connections between my lot (Anglo-Romani, Gypsy to you) & Irish Travellers (Pavee if you please). It involves a lot of guesswork & lot of social science stuff that sounds like bullshit & a lot of controversy & I've tried to get them to explain it to me repeatedly but I'm still none the wiser.

Pavee! That's a new one to me. This thread is getting bloody informative. Apparently I have a bit of Romany lurking from generations ago on my father's side, but they're long dead and only spoke German anyway so I'd need a multi skilled medium to ask them about it all. This thread is filling in some gaps.Datsue wrote:Captain Hook wrote:

What worries me is that this is probably trueKing Geedorah wrote:I believe that my Irish family are from travelling stock. They roamed the Irish countryside before settling in the Kilkenny hills and, according to a genealogy service, ‘terrorising the local population’. We were ‘Swarthy, dark irreligious’ fiends an’ all. ‘Knackers’ as they are known in Ireland. Solid people. Dudes.
Irish travellers seemed to see this in me. I was born here but would often bump into Irish people from travelling families and they always took to me. They’d call me ‘John’ and laugh their heads off when I replied, “I’m not called John, I am King Geedorah.”
God guys. They did stop us a few times in order to beat up my mates and strip them to their underwear. On these occasions the Irish lads would ask me to go into the shop for them, they were barred, to stock up on Ribena. Then we’d stand there sipping the purple drank as they administered some ritual humiliation to my pals, who deserved it to be fair.
BTW Are you up for my stag do on August 20 KG, it's in sunny Manchester. I'll send out invited to the Boxrec boys who know me, and I don't argue with :)
I'm getting married in Gibraltar in September......
We'll wear our Boxrec T-shirts :)

Some of you guys might not know this but there are Romany Gypsy's in the usa ..they look the same and live the same,do same types of trades/work and are nowhere near as hated or discriminated against over there ,...i often get talking to a lot American travelers on facebook and they cant believe it when i tell them how hard are culture has got it over here in the uk.
Gypsy people in the UK are the most hated discriminated against ethnic race ...its sad fact,...the uk will grant planning permission for any Muslims that want to build mosques anywhere and in any city they wish, yet a gypsy family has to fight tooth and nail to get planning on any land they own..you know i think like one in every 20 might get planning .
Is that right or fair ?..i am not saying that we are all angels but some of us get money by working hard,My family have been settled in the same little village since 1986 and well liked and respected ,my father got in to buying and selling land/property so we've worked hard all our lives and earned money an got what weve got the right way..from hard graft, some people dont seem interested in this side to our culture, only what gets made up on some stupid tv show
My sister has worked for 5 years for house of Frazer the top department store selling channel etc the store thinks the world of her yet she wouldn't dare tell them shes a gypsy...she wouldn't want to lose her job ,She often laughs at how her work colleagues make racist comments about other gypsy's that come in the store to buy stuff and yet these same colleagues have bought my sister stuff for her birthday and been out for meals with yet have not got a clue what she is
...its because she lives in a nice little bungalow and not a trailer i guess ...but it is funny lol
But ent it terrible when you gotta hide what you are because of something like that .

Some in the community park up their trailers on other people's land and when they eventually do move on leave the place in a right state.
Some of the planning applications that get put in are flat out ridiculous, mate. That's the problem. If you buy a piece of greenfield land, you can't be too surprised when an application to build dwellings is turned down. If you could buy a field in the middle of nowhere and just build houses willy-nilly, every fornicator would be doing it.
Travellers aren't hated because they are travellers. They get the reputation they get because of the way they conduct themselves. If you all played the game and melded into society, or at least kept your heads down, there'd be no problem.
The US is a big place. In the UK it's not quite as easy to take the piss in one area and then move to another without anybody hearing anything about it.

That is some stereotypical bs right there ,You cant stone wall or tar with the same brush an ethnic group of people because a minority of them might be antisocial ...what your saying is that all gypsy's are exactly sameMachoMan09 wrote:You were the one who brought up travellers being discriminated against. I am telling you why they are discriminated against. You can call it 'bullshit' if you wish but you'd be kidding yourself. The other people you mention who abuse the system and don't bring value added to society are also frowned upon by the majority. It's up to the travelling community themselves to change people's perceptions about them - if they want to - blaming everybody else won't solve anything.mrpedigree wrote:What a load of Bull shitt ...you talk like its only travelers that have % in their numbers that behave like thisMachoMan09 wrote: Some of you earn money by working hard. He was pointing out, I think, that the 'stereotype' to which you refer does have some basis in fact and I agree with him. By the sounds of it, you accept this too - I suppose it's probably just the size of the 'small minority' we might differ on.
