Gary Newbon did boxing for ITV in the 80s and 90s and is a legend. He's just a little out of practice.

Darkes main contract is with ESPN, he's their lead man for the Premier League coverage and also does some MLS and internationals, Sky get him for boxing when he's got nothing on with ESPN.

To not know who Gary Newbon is - you would have to be 12 years old. Seriously..

Prior to this weekend, when was Newbon last on the boxing, mate? Let's say for argument's sake it was 1995. What age do you learn the names of sports presenters, 9-10 perhaps? So you're looking at anybody born post 1986 not having a scooby who Gary is. That's 25 and unders. Time goes on.

Think it was 1995. The Benn v McClellan bill on ITV. He called Gerald McClellan Mike McCallum if memory serves me correctly but it was in the heat of the moment and the man is still a legend.

Ambrose Mendy told me last year that Gary Newbon was only reason Nigel Benn made weight for the first Eubank fight. He was something like 6lbs over weight and Mendy spoke to Newbon, who took him to a friend's gym in Birmingham to get the weight off.

Newbon's post fight interview for the first Benn-Eubank was an hilarious mess. He'd clearly made his mind up before the fight that Eubank didn't stand a chance and didn't let the fact that he'd won get in the way of his interview. He basically asked the loser the winner's questions and vice versa. He told a bewildered Benn that "there were times when he had you rocking weren't there?" Nigel said "What do you mean? I got stopped!!" There's too much nostalgia about Newbon. Just because he's from way back doesn't mean he was any good. He made a name for himself by being rude to boxers after fights but didn't know his stuff and dropped clanger after clanger. He's always made stupid mistakes - it's got nothing to do with him being rusty.
