Garland Randall- American Hero

Rip Randall is one of the sacred names on the Vietnam monument, an American hero -and the most important pro athlete killed in the war. I believe his record is about complete but any info -biographical also -is needed. Let's pitch in to honor a former welter contender who gave it all for his nation.

I remember an article in either BI or Ring about him. I will look at my mags. Can you scan an article and enter it in the bio section or do you need to type it into that section.

Another boxer not as well known, Kelly Sonners was also killed in that war.

Last summer, Sports Illustrated had a cover story about a pro football player who was killed in Vietnam.The aticle claimed that this man was the only pro athlete to die there. I wrote to Sports Illustrated at the time, and apprised them of Rip Randall-they, in turn, sent me a lame letter contending that Randall was not an active boxer at the time of his death.He died in October of 1967 and his last bout was in March of 1966.Randall arrived in Vietnam in January of 1967-he must have entered the military at least 3 or 4 months prior to that time.Does anyone know if Randall was drafted? He had five children, so I don't think that he was. Sports Illusrated messed up big time when they overlooked Randall.

I just read in Ring 9/67 that Randall was home on emergency furlough from Vietnam. His son Garland Jr. had just underwent open heart surgery. It stated that Randall would have to spend seven more months in Vietnam with the 26th Infantry, where he had already won Bronze and Silver Stars for Valor under fire.

I've read the old Ring article about Randall. Sports Illustrated never even ran a small mention of Randall's sacrifice after I wrote to them.Randall should have been the cover story profile in Sports Illustrated last year and not Bob Kalsu(the football player who died in Vietnam 3 years after Randall).Or, both men should have received equal coverage.

I'm the nephew of Garland Randall, even though he'd already been killed in Vietnam before I was born. I'd really like to see him get the recognition he deserves. I can get additional information from my grandmother if you let me know what's required. I know she has records of his military service and his death while in Vietnam. He has 4 brothers and 3 sisters still living - one of which is my mother, Sarah Randall Wady. - Roderic Randall

special feature on the contents page titled:
"in Memoriam RIP RANDALL.

Also, a feature in the November 1967 issue of

thanks Roderic, in 1972, I had a chance to discuss Garland
with boxer Manny Gonzalez - a lot of positive discussion
concerning his time in the ring.
