Paul Smith twitter comment on the prizefighter final

Post by allahsnackbar »

Anybody else catch this;

"Arguably 2 of the biggest twats in boxing in the final!"

I thought that was a bit uncalled for. Both lads gave their all in their fights and we don't need Smith insulting them.

Does seem a bit much from someone who throws his toys out of the pram at any criticism.

Exactly, he's going round calling other boxers twats, well he's coming across like the biggest, bitterest twat of them all right now isn't he.

There's a lot of hypocrisy on these boasts - and Paul is a boxer and warrior, has more right to criticise other fighters.

Unlike all the keyboard nerd warriors here criticising him. So many boxrec posters are gross hypocrites, who criticise fighters until they appear on Boxrec, then brownose them, then criticise them when they have a disagreement (see Smith, Bellew etc)

No wonder so many boxers hate the Boxrec forum

It all depends really. I didn't like Bellew at first then after a while of being on here I 'got him' and liked his style, yeh he's cocky but he also is a nice lad and honest about things and doesn't bite people's head off if they criticise him.

Smith was also a good lad but lost the plot with a few people and should just have refrained from biting back with the trolls. Now after the De Gale fight he seems like a bitter man, sad really cos I liked him on the Hatton forums back in the day.

Is that definitely THE Paul Smith? I thought there was some debate about this before after some comments were made about Degale v Groves.

I don't think Paul Smith being a professional fighter gives him any more right to call other people twats than the rest of us.

The reason people get annoyed with Smith is because he has a really arrogant manner, he thinks he knows everything and has the right to talk down to people on internet forums because they haven't boxed and automatically know f**k all.

It's these people that ''know f**k all'' that pay his and other fighters wages, and as such he should have (and show) more respect.

It seems something that's exclusive to boxers, I know quite a few top level rugby players and they'll always listen to people and take on board any advice, whether it be technical or otherwise.

Fair point. I agree that fans, especially hardcore fans are the lifeblood of a sport and therefore the participants.

But if one were to be in his shoes, it must be difficult being a successful fighter as an amateur and pro, having givern so much energy and personal time to such a tough game, being openly criticised on open world forums.

I don't think any of us would like it if we were being discussed in a negative way by strangers - it's natural to become very defensive. I mean look at forums where individual posters get heated and start insulting each other and it can get very serious - with people offering to meet each other and fight on the street!!

you miss the point of what people are saying and why. first off, just cos smith is a pro boxer doesnt give him licence to call anyone a twat..especially, he should have more respect for fellow boxers as he is aware how tough it is to lace the gloves up..at any level.

to criticise smith for what he said doesnt make anyone internet nerds/warriors whatever you wanna call them. if smith was getting sht for nothing then yes I would agree with you, but he was proper out of order and has no right saying what he said. if he said the same thing on here i would respond but i dont have a twitter account so i couldnt respond to him on there.

i personally have never kiss a boxer's arse on this forum, and never would, but if anyone is out of order, boxer or no boxer, i would fckin tell them what i thought..smith acted like a cnt and deserves all of the negative feedback his actions warrant..

I think the major issue with this board compared to others is that some posters cannot abide other posters making criticisms/comments about fighters..... when that really is why we are here.

For instance, someone made a mildly amusing point about Kell Brook in the punditry thread and was shot down in seconds, with the ''who are you to say this.....'' or ''you wouldn't say it to his face....'' stuff. Is it the forum police or what?

It's one thing saying a fighter has average footwork, can't knock the skin off rice pudding or is ''domestic level at best'', and completely another calling someone crap or a glass jawed journeyman.

I've probably crossed the line on several occasions, probably when criticising the choice of title defences for Ricky Burns or the opponents for Frank Maloney's Olympians. There's no malice involved, it's just an opinion that wasn't put across in the best possible manner.

Don't think a prefix of 'arguably' make the comment ok. If they were in the same weight division as Smith then I could understand the wind up. They are not and comments of this nature are poor against fellow pros.

I didn't particularly like the way Smith reacted to a Carl Dilks post on this forum sometime ago. Fair play, opinions are like ar5eh0les, we all have them. Dilks came back on after the DeGale fight and made some posts which I really respected him for. Smith vanished after his fight with De Gale. Of course he owes us nothing, and it was great to hear his views while he was on here. I just can't help thinking of the football chant, 'you only sing when your winning'. Paul is a clever man, and he must know what it looks like but he's obviously got bigger fish to fry. Good luck to him.

As for Bellew, he is probably the most passionate boxer I have seen post about the sport. I think he acts the same way on here that he would if he was just another fan. IMO he would be a far bigger loss to the forum.
