Las Vegas, NV - The wait is over and once again Floyd "Money" Mayweather delivers as the undefeated six-time world champion announced today via his Twitter account @floydmayweather that he will return to the ring on Saturday, September 17, to face the hard-hitting and explosive current WBC Welterweight World Champion "Vicious" Victor Ortiz in what is now the biggest international boxing event of 2011.

The announcement of the fight, which will take place on Mexican Independence Day weekend, widely considered boxing's biggest weekend, sends shock waves across the sports pages as there is no denying that the younger, stronger and current champion Ortiz poses an extremely credible threat to Mayweather, who returns to the ring after a 16-month hiatus. It is a highly competitive and very dangerous match-up that will give fans a chance to see the sport's biggest star against the sport's newest star in one ring on one very special night of boxing action.

"I am ready to return to the ring and give my fans a fantastic night of boxing by fighting the best out there and for me, that is Victor Ortiz," said Mayweather. "He is the current champion and an extremely talented fighter who showed amazing skills, and heart, in his last performance against Andre Berto. At this stage of my career, these are the challenges I look for, a young, strong, rising star looking to make his mark in boxing by beating me. Like the rest of my opponents, he is going to try to prove that he can beat me. I commend him for accepting the fight, but on September 17, Ortiz is just going to be another casualty, the 42nd one who tried and failed. Trust me, I will be ready."

"I respect Mayweather because he has been a champion for many years and I know he will be ready, but so will I," said Ortiz. "I'm a strong fighter and I have worked really hard to silence my critics. I'm a world champion for a reason and I am not going to let go of my title any time soon. This is going to be a great fight, but I will remain a world champion for many years to come."

Floyd Mayweather (41-0, 25 KO's) remains boxing's biggest attraction, wowing crowds and generating record pay-per-view numbers each time he steps into the ring. In his last ring appearance on May 1, 2010, Mayweather dismantled Sugar Shane Mosley in a lopsided unanimous decision victory. Mayweather is no stranger to fighting on Mexican Independence Day weekend either, as prior to his sensational win over Mosley, he took on Mexican boxing star Juan Manuel Marquez on September 19, 2009, beating his opponent in spectacular fashion. During his extraordinary career, he has amassed wins over world champions such as Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton.

Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO's) is on fire. He is riding a six-fight undefeated streak including his sensational win over Andre Berto on April 16 of this year. The hard-punching southpaw proved himself throughout their 12-round battle when he survived a knock down in the sixth round and came back to drop Berto at the end of the sixth round in one of the most exciting fights in boxing this year. Ortiz, who was already known as one of the most powerful young fighters in the sport but was questioned in the past for his desire, showed the world that his heart matches his hands of steel when faced with the best in boxing.

"When Floyd fights, everyone stops to watch and this is an exciting time for boxing as it always is when Floyd steps into the ring," said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. "There is no better showman than Floyd and he backs up his legacy with amazing, one-of-a-kind skills. Victor Ortiz has shown us that he is a great fighter too and for the two of them to meet makes for a gigantic night for fans all over the world. It's always a thrill to see Floyd fight and it's even better when he faces the best out there such as a true champion like Ortiz. This is going to be a fight to remember. Sports fans have a lot to look forward to on September 17."

"There is no doubt that September 17 will again be this year's biggest night of boxing worldwide," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "When Floyd Mayweather fights, it is an event which brings fight fans, sports fans and the general public together to see this truly gifted athlete perform. Every year Floyd sets the bar and standard for most pay-per-view buys and this year will be no different. In Victor Ortiz, he is facing a young, strong and highly motivated world champion who knows that a win over the pound for pound champion will catapult him into superstardom. The stage is set and I can't wait for the showdown of the year."

Mayweather vs. Ortiz is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. A nationwide press tour is being planned for the week of June 20 with additional details about it and the fight to be announced shortly.

Should be a good fight, the Ortiz that was in with Berto will bring it to him if PBF wins this in style I would be very impressed.
Ortiz is in his prime and a big welter and he will throw caution to the wind to get to Mayweather not back off and hope he sees the final bell (Mosley you listening!)

looking at that list of names mayweather didn't fight is enough to make me vom, but at the same time, they weren't all strictly available when Floyd was at their weights. No excuses though, he should have at least fought three of them.

He has a better resume than most though, and a lot of his victories have been one sided wipeouts that everyone would knew would happen after the event, I remember some pretty high profile posters on here picking de la Hoya, and hatton. Greatest fighter of my generation ... I think.

It's boxing... hit and don't be hit... it's up to other fighters to make Mayweather stand and fight. This is a good fight considering he'llhave been out for nigh on a year and a half. Hardly a warm-up for Pacquiao, it's a tough fight.

Typical Mayweather fights a guy who is rated higly after coming of one good result which his opponent wasn't that prepared for. Ortiz did great in his last fight, but after that he is going to get rated much higher than he actually is at present

How many people would have given Ortiz a cat in hells chance of beating Mayweather prior to the Berto fight?

Exactly.

Agreed, nobody would have given Ortiz a chance, now all of a sudden, other than Pacquiao, there's no better challenge out there for Mayweather. Unfortunately there's a bit of truth to that when you look at the welterweight ratings, but if Mayweather really wanted a true challenge, i'm sure Cotto or Williams would have gladly dropped down to 147lbs, and i'm sure Martinez would have met him at a catch weight.

Mayweather has been waiting for the right moment, and he has found it in Ortiz. It is a fight that he is comfortable with and that he knows he will win.

On a side note, i have read snippets in a few places that Ortiz is bigger than Mayweather, where the eff is that nonsense comming from?

The main Vegas casino groups are not prepared to underwrite Mayweather v Pacquaio at the moment due to the former's legal woes.

Yeah that's kind of what I meant. Perfect preparation for Pacquaio if not quite in 'warm-up' territory. Also, as good as he is, Mayweather can't keep staying out for 16 months at a time, it will catch up with him and he'll get in there one night and be like Mosley - unable to pull that trigger.

are golden boy just using their fighter - a guy they could build into a p4p star - just to get a piece of mayweather?

ok, if it goes well for ortiz, then they make loads of money, give ortiz a massive boost and make money off mayweather name (and proven PPV selling power).

but are they possibly sacrificing a guy who does great ratings and maybe needs something less demanding after winning a very tough fight vs andre berto.

How are they sacrificing him, if he loses, it's hardly a career ender is it? Also, it's not likely Mayweather is going to whup his arse so badly that he's mentally ruined is it?

I find it absolutely hilarious that some people think Ortiz will win this fight. Its almost as if they've never watched Mayweather. How can anyone seriously believe that a man beaten by Maidana can stand a chance against Mayweather.

I also think the stuff about Mayweather ducking fights is nonsense. The man's a total egomaniac who hasnt lost in a boxing ring since his teens, I doubt he fears anyone. He fights who he wants when he want because it suits him, not because he's afraid.

Boxing must be the only sport in the world where the guy actively promoting the use of olympic testing is the villain and the one who refuses is the hero. There's no reasonable excuse for Pacqiauo not to take the tests.

I dont think he fears anyone per se but I do get the feeling that his 0 is very important to him and he wouldnt want to jeapordise it even if there is only a 25% chance of him losing it against someone like Manny P

Of course his 0 is important to him. With the kind of fickle twunts in the boxing world, his 0 is all he has, and he's wise to protect it as best he can. Most boxing fans are so far up Manny's arsehole that they can't see the the negotiations between him and Floyd failed because Pac-Man wouldn't agree to the testing.

Everyone saying the Nevada commission is trustworthy, please, pull the other one. We all know that boxing commissions are as bent as a nine-bob note.

So what is Floyd as bent as? The man is the biggest joke in boxing history.

Pac doesn't have to agree to anything unless somebody of authority says so, I don't rate him that highly either, K-G would have pulverised him.

I'm certainly not a Mayweather sycophant, but breakdown his last couple of opponents with Manny's.

I have endless Roach and Arum quotes (on youtube interviews) saying shit like "Floyd will never fight Mosley" or "Mosley's old and washed up" or "Marquez is old" etc etc - THIS IS ALL FACT as well. Please deny these things were said, at your peril.

then guess what?

Floyd fights Mosley first...then guess who fights him? then Manny-Mosley suddenly becomes a good fight to Arum and Roach. Then Manny fights Marquez, because "the boxing world wants it".

Get the fornicate outta here, about Mayweather sycophants. Manny is just as engineered as you say Floyd is.
