Yep, had a go in Brophy's tent in '95 during at the Birdsville races. A lot of fun and a great experience and has given me an even greater story to recount at the pub.

No, but I knew blokes who fought in the tents. Bernie Hourigan told me they usually fought each other.

'95 was a long time after I spoke to Bernie. I used to watch Sharman's fighters at the Easter show. You could tell any outsider who challenged one of Jim's fighters, he got the shit beaten out of him. :KO:

the tents were a chance to pick up a quid at the shows around the hunter, sharman and roy bell were around in the early fifties, the SANDS ,LARRIGO,s and KAPEEN were the main lineups, so yes Brute it was best and safer to work with one of your mates, all the best

Saw the fights one night in the middle 60s at the Show. This big bloke had "challenged" Sharman's wrestler. He got the "win" in spite of old Jim yelling at him from his perch through the mike that he was a "really dirty wrestler." Outside the tent after the last fight (the wrestlers were on first) the same big bloke was challenging again. He hadn't even bothered to put his shoes and socks back on!

At the time I was doing a course at East Sydney tech on Monday nights. Monday after the show ended I went to Kings Cross to get something to eat before the class and saw Sharman's team walking together and the big bloke was one of them.

Colin Wilson's brother Blair was unbeaten in 507 tent fights.

Only won two of thirteen fights as a regular pro.

yeah it was good. Me and Jimmy Shannon went at it pretty hard. Me and my mate had a tag team match with Jimmy and James Ellis. Got a draw so no harm done.

I went up against 'Mandingo' in '95. He landed three glancing blows, I had a gazillion points off for 'hitting below the belt', Brophy scored it a draw. 'Mandingo' did this for a living, I was there to entertain my mates, I didn't pay for another drink for the rest of the night. Every one's a winner in that tent.

Was that the same Mandingo as the bloke Adam Fogerty KOed on the Jeff Harding/ Doug Sam card at Rosehill in April 1988?

Fogerty was a Pom who later played Rugby League and went on to play "heavies" in Pommy films. He won all but one of his 19 fights as well. Real all rounder.

Haha, no I doubt it was the mysterious 'Mandingo', Brute, my guy would have been lucky to be a light heavy weight. I love the back stories on these tent guys, my opponent was apparently undefeated in over 400 fights, had appeared in penthouse magazine for his record at the time for the world's quickest knockout and said 400 plus victories undefeated  , and at least this part of his story I could back up, had fought on every tent fight show, three a day, of the Birdsville cup that year (I fought on the last fight of the week) and had one every fight by KO.
