It's amazing to think that back in 1997 Rhodes was the 'spice boy' of british boxing and at 21 years old nearly beat Otis Grant for the wbo middleweight title.

Now at 34 and four losses later he has the chance to finally win a world title and he's got a good chance against Alvarez, would be great to see him do it and i think if he can survive the early stages he'll have a good chance to take Saul out in the final third of the fight. Saying that though in terms of what's better for Boxing Alvarez needs to win and continue to become a future superstar of the sport.

One thing to note though is that Rhodes has never lost as a Light Middleweight.

Is Alvarez better than a peak Otis Grant at this stage of his career? i dont think so, and as has already been pointed out, Ryan ran him close that night. Although RR has had his dips,noticably Lee Blundell and (massive for the weight) Matthews, i think these were more a mental thing rather than physical, RR seemed to be goin nowhere fast. Think he turned the corner v Lockett, while still at the higher weight showed more steel. Most importantly i feel RR really believes that a world title is his destiny and far from being put off from travelling abroad thinks it will make the win all the more memorable.

And that is before you factor in things like altitude and that it is a WBC title fight featuring Sulaiman's young star taking place in Mexico.
Sadly, Rhodes doesn't have a chance and 8-1 on his winning by stoppage looks quite skinny to me. I'm sure you will find many better 8-1 shots at Ascot this week.

Very good analysis of ryan career. Ryan is a big light middle weight also and has never lost at this weight.

I don't usually gamble but i might for this one. Can someone give me the best odds around for a Rhodes win and rhodes by stoppage.

Alvarez has got a title way too soon. If he couldn't take out an undersized and fairly ordinary Matthew Hatton a bigger slicker more talented and experienced Rhodes could box rings around him. I can easily imagine Ryan making him look silly and clumsy and taking a wide decision.

Respect to him, he deserves his shot and he's a consummate pro, but I can see a painful night and a mid-rounds defeat.

Fair analyisis York ss but do you think Alvarez is world class yet? Think Hatton exposed him a little. Dont get me wrong even 18 months down the line i think RR would have started to slip too much and Alvarez' star would be burning way too bright to give RR a chance. When you talk about RR mixing in domestic and euro at best i consider Hatton,with all due respect a lower level european fighter. Also interesting is the comparisons between Hatton n RR when predicting a result - MH more durable tho lighter, RR Bigger puncher tho a tad more fragile.....

It's interesting how several people are criticizing Alvarez for one average showing against Hatton (a fight that Alvarez throughly dominated), yet don't seem to think Rhodes' lossess to Blundell, Matthews, and Lockett are relevant. Also, too much is being made out of Rhodes' unbeaten streak at 154; he has defeated only one fighter worth mentioning at the weight and he was given a relatively competitive bout by Vincent Vuma.

I think Canelo would have a bit more than Rhodes no matter where the bout was held, but with the bout taking place in Mexico, Alvarez might get an extra edge from the local support and favorable officiating.
