His book is a really good read. By all accounts he really struggled with the weight, particularly towards the end of his career.

no mate he dont last i heard he was working on the bins shame realy as he was a proper oldschool fighter and should of been set for life i always wounder how duff and lawless ever slept at night after some of the strokes they pulled on fighters

he had the misfortune to go up against a prime sot chitalada. the thai was not always on form, but he was rapid fire that night and usually took care of aggressors. magri nailed sot with some great shots, seemed to be boxing superbly - for a couple of rounds...

wasn't magri's best win before he actually won the world title? santos laciar, who would manage a draw and a win and a loss vs the great gilberto roman, and beat another hall of fame bound fighter, hilario zapata...i think harry mullan, in his book heroes and hard men, said this was a superb fight, the 10-rounder between magri & laciar.

Not sure, to be honest.

I seem to remember that Junior Witter won a Lonsdale belt without getting to the required amount of defenses, as suitable challengers couldn't be found.

I think his family was originaly from France? He used to say he was going to have his nose fixed when he retired ( he had the bone taken out, or something weird like that ) doesn't look like he's too bothered though.

When Warren had the brilliant Keith Wallace on his books, he tried to get Magri in the ring for a mini UK superfight - taking out WANTED posters in Boxing News.
I think it was Warren who landed Magri his last world title shot, against "The Muhammad Ali of the far East" - Sot Chitalada, a fantastic fighter.
Charlie came out bombing, and seemed to shake up the champion a few times, but Chitalada calmly rode out the storm and came back with his own punches to finish off Magri a few rounds later.

Yes, he was born in Tunisia and brought up in Stepney, before moving to Bethnal Green. I hate to speak ill of he dead, but he would have murdered Wallace with body shots. Warren put up a combined offer of £60,000 for a 1982 meeting, huge money back then (you could buy a nice house for £20,000). That may have been another reason why Magri and Lawless didn't get on. Magri lost out on a big payday in a winnable fight out of sheer politics.

Yeah remember the advert in Boxing News, a photo of Warren (must have been at the Bloomsbury Crest) with £60,000 spread all over the desk.

I think the British Flyweight champ of the late 60s and early 70s John Mcclusky was also awarded his lonsdale belt without making the stipulated 3 defences.... due to lack of opposition.
Charlie was a great little fighter.... to be fair to Harry Mullan I think his comments asking for Charlie to retire was motivated by a true concern for him rather than just a antipathy for Duff, Magri became rather open to head punches later in his career and certainly was past his best when he won the WBC title...... had he got his shot say 3 years before I think Charlie would have raked up a couple of good defences.
Charlies nose got like that after it was badly broken when he was sparring with Mark Kaylor... a 6 foot plus middleweight!!! :( :( :( :x
Isn't it true that Magri fell out with Lawless after his last bout and has never talked to him since?..... any more info on this.... 8)

McCluskey made the Lonsdale his own with two wins over Tony Barlow and one over Tony Davies but McCluskey holds the record for the longest time to win a lonsdale belt whilst champion (8 years)

Do you know what he's doing now Eric? I lost touch with him as he didnt keep his mobile contract, and then he lost the pub, after I worked with him on the book.

Just wondered what he's doing now. I'd heard he was back doing demolition work a while back.
