World Boxing Union

Post by Brute »

August 5 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Lucas Browne and Clarence Tillman fight for the vacant WBU Heavyweight Title. Oscar Siale and Danny Price fight for the WBU Cruiserweight Title.

Is somebody trying to revive this dormant outfit as the Western Australian Boxing Union?

That was all Big George was left with when no other organisation recognised his 1996 title defence against that Crawford Grimsley character who Jimmy Thunder KOed in 13 seconds four months later later.

It was good. Ricky was not only the champ, he was also #2 contender for a number of years. I wonder why he never threw in a challenge??

That is a ten round fight with no title on the line. Choi held that title in 2008. I think he let it lapse.

The WBU have reformed as a new company based in Germany. It's not the same company that sanctioned multiple fights on allegedly bills back in the day. Last time I looked, this organisation were sanctioning anything for 1000 euros.

I can remember in 1967 when aging American middleweight Tony Montano was thrown in with light heavyweight Bobby Dunlop after he beat Australian middleweight champion Tony Barber (not the quiz master or Aztecs guitarist). Channel Nine sports commentator and Stadiums Ltd stooge Ron ("Won") Casey said they could do that as Montano was middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight of Arizona. My father commented that this was like being middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight champion of Merrylands.

I guess you're being facetious but I don't think there's any validitity whatsoever in suggesting Hatton wasn't "good". The belts he won after the WBU proves that, and nobody at any time believed the WBU was anything more than a tool for him at the time.

Ricky was a good fighter. The organisation is a joke, not him.
