This fight is not a matchmaker's dream, but it could wind up interesting.

I'm assuming Floyd would bring the fight for the most part to Tunney.

Man, I always love that on the toes, probing, peek-a-boo style of Floyd's.

Would his lightning fast combinations and leaping left hook get to Tunney at some point?

I think so.

...buzz..you can't count floyd out even if he does hit the deck because so often he got up again. even in ingemar I he was on his feet when it was stopped.

i've always been partial to tunney and i think he'd take this one on points...but with no degree of certainty.

i'm trying to stay away from fantasy fights because they can be fun but too many take them seriously and there really isn't any way to make them anything but guesswork...educated guesses in some cases, but still.....just opinions with not a lot to back them up with.

Tunney on points. Ive always thought very highly of Tunney, though Patterson would be a test.

Floyd has the speed and power to get to Tunney but I think moe often than not Gene, who a durable fighter, would take it.

I see Tunney sticking his jab in Floyd's face all night while sliding and tucking away from the fast combos.

Tunney by comfortable points decision or late stoppage.

Have to go with Tunney. He was just too good. He was hard to hit and had a good chin. That combination makes you extremely hard to stop. He also had pretty good hand speed himself. It would be an exciting fight. May go the distance. It might depend on the distance.

I love Tunney, but I think Patterson just throws more punches and edges a decision.

Patterson throws more punches than Tunney? Based on what?

I think this would be a fairly easy fight for Tunney really . . he was a far superior boxer to Patterson, had a great chin/durability, incredible stamina . . he'd counter the crap out of Floyd all night.

I'll make one controversial assertion of which I do have full faith.

Patterson's power is VASTLY under rated.

Ingo and 'Enery, among others, would likely agree.

Right, b/c Henry Cooper and Ingo Johansson are in the same league as Gene Tunney . .

This would be far from an easy fight for Tunney; in fact, its closer to a toss up than that.
Patterson's hand speed and underrated power would trouble Tunney greatly. I wouldn't be surprised if Tunney tasted the canvas once or twice. Patterson would definitely taste the canvas. Forcing myself to make a pick i say Tunney's strength, jab and foot work wins him a very close UD.

I didn't say that, jackass.

Patterson still had underrated power and he would give Tunney a hell of a lot of trouble.

I agree completely, & have said that many times.

However, Tunney's chin was one of his many strengths.

I'm sure I'll draw ire from the dempsey contingent in saying Tunney never had to deal with an athlete the caliber of patterson. I think that would cause him significant trouble early on. Floyd's chin gets undersold and I honestly don't see either guy hitting the canvas. I'll take Tunney by close decision on his ring smarts. But I imagine I would have money on Floyd.

Ha, you can make that claim but it's not true. Greb, Loughran, Dempsey are extremely athletic fighters and superior fighters to Patterson.

They were superior fighters, that doesn't make them superior athletes. Especially the past his prime version of Dempsey that Tunney faced. Floyd more than likely would have handled him too.

You actually think dempsey & greb were as fast of hand and foot as Patterson was? I know you adore that era, but that's insanity.

Floyd would've handled that Dempsey? No way in hell . . no weak-jawed, offensive-minded fighter is lasting with any version of Dempsey. Tunney had the perfect style to foil an older Dempsey . . .incredible speed, conditioning, movement, and counterpunching. Patterson is a different kettle of fish, not nearly as slick. No guy that has a life and death struggle with Chuvalo is lasting the distance vs Dempsey.

And yes, if not faster hands, as fast if not faster feet. Dempsey had probably the quickest 'spring' of all heavyweight champions, including Patterson.

No point in discussing this with you then. Jack dempsey was super human, even at the very end of his career.

You were holding my interest with the athlete comment (Patterson was indeed an interesting specimen, with some unique gifts, & his power is always under-valued), but I gotta say, the Dempsey who showed up for his second fight with Tunney would still put Patterson's lights out. It's not just that I disagree with you there, I cannot see a case for Patterson.
