Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
Ryan is a good guy, but he is going to be on the wrong end of a hard night tonight.
9/1 on a Rhodes KO win is a decent price but unless Alvarez falls apart under the early pressure then I cant see Ryan getting to the end of this one.

As you'd expect, Ryan looks ultra confident, and not too fazed about having his first fight abroad, after all these years.bobmee wrote:Weigh-in footage and brief interview with Rhodes on this link http://boxingchannel.com/official-weigh ... -vs-rhodes
He's so fit, that even at his advanced age, he might actually be near his peak, in terms of the massive experience and cool head he'll have as a result of it.
Could be a very interesting fight. Think Ryan says 11pm in the vid, so that's be about 5am Uk time I think.

Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
I would be delighted if Ryan could pull off the upset. I give him one chance in ten. Alvarez is a future hall of famer.

Precisely. If Rhodes were any other nationality, we wouldn't be giving him a prayer.reggaereggae wrote:An ageing Rhodes, who got stopped by Lee Blundell, in Mexico, against Mexico's new star fighter....er no
Mid 30s. Stopped very early twice by domestic-level opposition. Most recently beaten by a tough but hardly world class Gary Lockett. Never fought abroad. Best wins at domestic level. Last fought for a world title 13 and a half years ago.
Before anyone jumps on me, I'm rooting like hell for the guy and I thoroughly admire his longevity, conditioning, resolve and late-career resurgence. But it is late in a career which, let's be honest, has always been about potential rather than achievement. And he's going in with what looks to be a true superstar in the making, on away ground.

Sorry Oliver, but this is that rarity where you're talking absolute nonsense here. The Rhodes currently in the ring bears little resemblence to the one stopped by Blundell, while Canelo is a 'star fighter' on the basis of publicity rather than performances to date.oliverfennell wrote:Precisely. You have to favour the Mexican on the basis of his potential and having home advantage, but the idea that posters on here are acting irrationally in making a case for Rhodes purely on the basis of his nationality is ridiculous - you only have to look at Doug Fischer's analysis earlier in the thread to see that neutral observers who know a thing or two about boxing see this as a close-run thing rather than the mis-match you're portraying it as.

Well, we'll just have to see, and I'll happily admit I'm wrong if it so happens that I am.Deserter wrote:Sorry Oliver, but this is that rarity where you're talking absolute nonsense here. I know Rhodes is not the same fighter now as he was against Blundell, but I still don't see any evidence on his record of him being a world title threat. As I said, his whole career is ranked on potential at world level rather than achievement in it.
Of course Alvarez may turn out to be overrated, and Rhodes may well be his toughest opponent yet, but already Alvarez's wins are better than Rhodes' best wins.
Again, I hope Rhodes wins and will be pulling for him to do so, but the cases being made for him are again based on the possibles rather than the tangibles - if Alvarez is being overrated Rhodes may win, rather than Rhodes may win because he's a known world-level force.
Oh, and I'm not accusing anyone of bias insofar as it being deliberate, but more that their heart is overruling their head. Remember a lot of people believed Bruno would beat Tyson, Hatton would beat Mayweather, etc.

Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
Be interesting to see how they match up size wise in the ring. I'm used to Alvarez being the big guy at welter and Ryan being the little guy at middle, despite his fights at 154. That first look at them together once they've rehydrated could tell us a lot.
Get in there Ryan! Few things in boxing would make me happier than Ryan winning this one. It'd be absolutely mega. Gagging to see this fight, well played Sky.

Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
And I'm not disputing the issue of possibles and tangibles, just taking issues with your inference that any rational observer would view it as a forgone conclusion that Canelo will win - as I've already mentioned, you've got an earlier example in the thread where two neutral (and therefore 'rational') experts see it as anything but that.oliverfennell wrote:the cases being made for him are again based on the possibles rather than the tangibles - if Alvarez is being overrated Rhodes may win, rather than Rhodes may win because he's a known world-level force.

Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
Thought that the aforementioned preview was spot on and well informed, as to RR, i watched him as a novice ko paul jones for the world title) and then run a peak Otis Grant close and lose only on experience it seemed. I know it may sound daft but i dont think Ryan has ever shown his full potential, and as good as his win over Jamie was i dont think he's had his career defining fight yet. Hopefully we see it tonight!!!!!Deserter wrote:And I'm not disputing the issue of possibles and tangibles, just taking issues with your inference that any rational observer would view it as a forgone conclusion that Canelo will win - as I've already mentioned, you've got an earlier example in the thread where two neutral (and therefore 'rational') experts see it as anything but that.oliverfennell wrote:the cases being made for him are again based on the possibles rather than the tangibles - if Alvarez is being overrated Rhodes may win, rather than Rhodes may win because he's a known world-level force.

Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
Presumably, Rhodes is given a chance here because he carries a decent shot, and ginger spice was nearly flattened by the smaller Cotto ( Ryan the artist formely know as spice boy - spice man ? ) And Ryan is crafty enough to make sure he lands some heavy shots early, to see just how good Canelo is.

Come on Ryan - I give him a good chance here, certainly better than 6/1.

Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
Have put some money on Rhodes in the middle rounds. At 66/1 any round I think it's worth a shot.
Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
Well, Ryan has got some good skills, throws punches from unorthodox angles and can certainly bang with some authority. I am not sure he is a durable as Matthew Hatton, who I predicted to last the course with Canelo.
Canelo has been hurt but I am not sure Ryan has enough firepower to stop him. Canelo is young, hungry and determined but probably not as good as he is being hyped.
Ryan wont ever get a decision there, in his hometown, so Ryan has to stop him. A big ask and just don't see it.
Canelo could win early but I go for a stoppage around 6.
I, will of course, be pulling for Ryan to do it, though. As he used to say time to 'have it'.

Is there an online link to the fights please gentlemen?
Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
4.30 a.m. ring walk uk time for any folks watching in the US..... ;;-)
Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
Very interesting fight. You'd have to make Canelo the favourite, but Rhodes is a very live dog for me. We haven't seen much of him on the road, but if he travels well then he could definitely spring the upset. He'll probably need the stoppage though.

send me a pm and I'll send you a link - I can't send pms to people unless they send one to me. Must have been a badboyloaded_gloves wrote:Is there an online link to the fights please gentlemen?

Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
I have bet big on canelo on points @ 3.6 then layed off not going the distance @ 1.5. No way ryan wins on points in mexico. Giving me a risk free shot at 2.1 margin, in theory...
Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
Anyone planning on waking up at 5 AM to watch this? I'm thinking about it.
Re: Rhodes-Canelo build up
Definitely. I'm on the road for a family do when Sky are showing this.

I'd never be able to wake up at that time.

I'm worried I'm going to wreck another day by doing that. 5 hours to go, though. I might get a few hours sleep, watch the fight, then sleep some more.Deno1986 wrote:Waking up? I'm planning on staying up.Asterix wrote:Anyone planning on waking up at 5 AM to watch this? I'm thinking about it.

Anyone got any TNT? I'll need it to wake myself up.
