Did Coldwell really say "you've lost every round, so you may as well get knocked out" ?!

he did. although he was trying the persuade him to open up, not to try and get knocked out.
Ah right, well Dave did the right thing throwing in towel in the end.

The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, It will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently IF YOU LET IT…

You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But It ain’t about how hard you hit… it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much can you take and keep moving forward? THAT’S HOW WINNING IS DONE!"

Jon saxon i know you must have boxed at a decent level to even accuse some1 of bottling it after taking the fist Rhodes took in a world title shot. Now if your saying he didn't grasp his chance with both hands or he looked rusty or his timing was off or he didn't employ the right tactics...well i'll stand for that but dont ever level the worst accusation you can at a fighter by calling him a bottler without proper cause, but like i said Jon with you having boxed some real flyers in your career you know what its like when you have to employ a bit of caution for fear of gettin your face re-arranged.

The better man won and it's as simple as that, no shame in it at all. Maybe people should give a bit more credit to Matt Hatton also who has come on in leaps and bounds the last few years and gave Canelo a tricky night without ever threatening an upset.

Here's what i think,

I would have loved for him to go back in time and try the old Naz bend down come up with a corkscrew uppercut rght on the gingers chin, take him by surprise and let him know he's gonaa be in a ding dong.

When he realised that he was not going to outbox the Mexican he should have put it on the line.
Like I said I like Ryan Rhodes the man but he will wake up this morning and feel the same.

He didn't bottle it, but he struggled to cope from early on. It was shown in the way he kept switching stance, even though David Coldwell told him not to. That ended up becoming some sort of subconscious move to try and buy some time.
Can't expect a boxer to turn into a career brawler. Sometimes if thing don't fall your way, there's nothing you can do.
He was over-matched, which was obvious from the start, despite some of the ludicrous predictions made on here. Boxing News even had 50 per cent thinking he would win.

Moore punched himself out against Rhodes. There were stories of him losing huge weight to get down to 11st. That's why he started so quick, because he realised he only had 5 rounds before his legs went.

Ryan could not handle the speed and power, which made him reluctant. Add to that the body shots and its no surprise he fought the way he did. I thought he would better, on the night, but credit goes to Canelo for making him fight the way he did.

I do agree that the old 'Spice Boy' would have probably done alittle better, with his added speed and unorthodox punching but this is 2011 and that version of Rhodes disappeared a long time ago.

Having said all that, Canelo was wide open for the uppercut and Rhodes didn't throw any, which I thought they might have picked up on. Especially when Canelo was pretty much always able to avoid Ryan's straight punches and come back with speed.

More uppercuts and definately more body work, definately body punches would have worked but hey, Ryan did aswell as he could, on the night, so fair play :TU:

There's seems to be a complete lack of respect for Rhodes's performance on different boxing forums. It amazes me how fans of the sport can call his performance rubbish I think they'd rather someone go all out swinging with no thought behind it and then get knocked out.
at least Rhodes didn't get on his bicycle for 12 rounds, he did what he could but was beaten in all departments.

Rhodes was just outclassed by a wide margin. He didn't bottle it, he didn't run, he came forward, stayed in range, and took his lumps. He just wasn't good enough against a guy who looks like he might just be a special talent. No shame in that.

As an aside, anyone else think the ringcard/Corona girls were different class?

Excellent analysis
:TU: quote="johnswan1"]I felt Alvarez improved a lot from the Hatton fight. He probably underestimated Hatton but seemed to have taken Rhodes very seriously.

For a twenty year old he boxed in a very mature manner. He doesn't appear to have single punch KO power but he is extremely strong, accurate, calm, patient and throws nice combinations.

However, on the back foot I think he looks vulnerable. His head movement was good and he was hit less than he was against Hatton, but he'll be tested much more when somebody tries to take the fight to him.

Rhodes seemed surprised by the strength and speed of Alvarez and seemed to be discouraged. Not until the later rounds did he throw anything with bad intentions. He wasn't able to deal with the combinations and looked all over the place any time he was backed up. The corner didn't seem to have a Plan B and even if they did I doubt it would have been enough.

Alvarez looked huge, I wonder if he has problems making weight and I doubt he'll remain at Light Middle for too much longer.

I don't think he's the complete package just yet. We all thought Rhodes would test him, but he didn't. I think he should be looking for a fight with Cotto next, whom I think he'd wear down and stop, although I think Cotto is after the Margarito rematch.

Any potential bout with Chavez Jr seems a long way off yet as both can sell tickets independently. My favourite matchup for him would be with Cintron or Williams.[/quote]

Man, i know Ryans happily married but you'd like to think there'd be some sort of consolation waiting in back at his hotel eh?

I think it's a difficult one, because of Alvarez's age it's hard to say just how good he'll end up being. He's essentially a world champ, learning on the job.

I think it's fair to say that up until now he's certainly looked beatable, 154 isn't a stacked division and Bundrage aside, there's about 5 or 6 guys who you just wouldn't put Alvarez in with, yet. So imho it's too early to be calling Alvarez a future superstar, at least not in the mould of a De La Hoya or JCC.

I can see where Jon's coming from to be honest. I think he's being overly harsh with it, but at the same time I'm sure a lot of people viewed this as Rhodes swan song, and as such it wasn't a performance that reflected that, he didn't 'go out on his shield'. If the game plan was knocking the kid out because they'd never get the nod on the cards, then it's hard to look at the performance and say, yeah, that was the plan, it just didn't work.

Rhodes said it wasn't the end of the line for him and I'm sure he'll be in some more competitive fights at euro/brit level, but it's over as far as winning a world title goes and that's hard to take as a fan.

Aye, great analogy! Castro threw even f*cking less than Rhodes and Jackson got sloppy, which Alvarez didn't. What a load of sh1te

I just think everyone who thought Rhodes would win was huge under-estimating Alvarez and over-rating Rhodes. He was trying to win a title at altitude in Mexico and had never boxed outside the UK before.
Apart from Moore, who was weight drained, and Otis Grant a lifetime ago, he'd never boxed in near that class.
Indeed - I'm not saying I over-estimated Rhodes but I certainly under-estimated Alvarez. He was miles better than I expected.
