I'm surprised you're saying either of them in this context. For example, I haven't seen anyone of here predicting Macklin will beat Sturm while a lot of people recognise Burns' improvement but fall some way short of heralding him as a legend-in-the-making.
The general consensus appears to be that both are Euro-level/fringe world-class and that appears about right, certainly not over-rating them.
It's a good question though and I think I'd probably have to say that Kell Brook potentially falls into this category at the moment based on achievements to date (rather than potential). Cleverley is another one where the jury is still out. And unfortunately I'd have to add Darren Barker's name as I think some on here over-rate him in the context of his ability to hang at world-class level.

Ricky Burns has a world title???? but never seen anyone really rate him other than his trainer.
Could call him an over achiever not over rated. Last time I heard it was common to think he may not even be best domestically.

Kell Brook definately not over rated just not been given the fights to prove his hype.

Ok, ok in my point of view:

Matthew Macklin - The fact that his fighting for a world title and has a boxrec ranking of 12, when in my opinion its very questionable that he is the best domestically. This is what draws me to this judgement. Plus he was very poor and looked very ordinary in his last 2 outings.

Ricky Burns - Has to be the poorest World Champion out there, and with Frank Wa**en seemingly puposely cashing in on these big shows in Scotland by putting him in against weak opposition, then can't see things changing until a unification fight happens.

Have to disagree with your judgements on Kell Brook and Cleverly as at least these 2 have shown potential at being able to cut it at World level. Obviouasly time will tell and the jury may still be out, but with regards to the 2 i mentioned. Have they ever shown us any thing?

Hear what you're saying about Macklin and Burns, but people on here aren't over-rating them. The fact you regard Burns as one of the poorest world champs out there is actually shared by the vast majority, thus surely meaning he's not over-rated?

With Brook and Cleverley I'm not 100% convinced myself to be honest. In the case of Kell I was very specific in putting that it was based on achievements to date rather than potential i.e. many are talking of him as already being in world-class, yet his best win to date probably remains Jennings.
As for Cleverley, I count myself as a fan, but do wonder whether he's going to be able to cut it at genuine world-level as many seem to be predicting.

Do you mean over rated by us? or by the press?

I'd say some boxers are over rated by the press, but then thats probably the promoter doing a good job getting the boxers face in the paper.

Even though I think he has a lot of potential, I'd say David Price. The big man has looked very good recently, but several people are already talking about him making it to the apotheosis of world heavyweight boxing. I think those discussions are premature, as Price's best wins were over Rafael Butler and an unprepared Tom Dallas. Several heavyweight prospects and contenders that have recently emerged boast more impressive resumes than Price.

Prior to this weekend I would've said Ryan Rhodes by a longshot.

Overrated and good/talented/class are not mutually exclusive terms.

Ricky Burns is a legitimate World Champion, he beat a highly rated World Champion to win his belt and ok his defences have been mediocre but he has won them with the minimum of ease and looked a class or two above the opposition in them! My pick's would be Ashley Sexton, has a lot of hype and seems a great guy but as of yet I haven't seen anything overly special, hope I see it on the Haye card though because he seems a good guy!

Who rates Hatton? If anything I'd say that he is underrated.

I doubt many on here would think Bellew is world class at this time, but the thing with Bomber is he has the punch that can turn a fight around in seconds..

What difference does it make if he posts on here? Look what he done every time he gets put down, gets back up and wins the fight. Tony hasn't got the best boxing skills in the world but does what he needs to do to win fight, I don't think anyone over rates him. After all he is still the unbeaten Commenwealth champ.

Lots of our fighters are overrated but the ones that really stick out for me are

Paul Smith

Tony Jeffries

Prince Arron

And before Rees boxed rings around him Andy Murray.
